The weather is finally starting to feel a little more like fall here in NY, so today I reached into the sample pile for something a little darker and woodier. Today’s choice is Bois d’Ébène from Matière Première. This is my first proper wear, and right away it feels much more in step with the season. It has a dry, woody, slightly earthy character that feels grounded and warm without becoming heavy. There is a bit of spice there too, but what I’m noticing most is how calm and put-together it feels. After months of brighter citrus, florals and summer freshies, it is actually kind of nice to move into something with a little more depth. That seasonal shift is one of the things I really enjoy about fragrance. The weather changes, the wardrobe changes, and suddenly bottles and samples that didn’t make sense a month ago start calling your name. So far, a very nice first impression.

Hello All & Happy Independence Day to everyone who’s celebrating!! My wife and I just put new shelving up in our cedar closet and I have started unpacking my collection. Hers is still boxed away 😳😬 It’s been a while since the bottles have been pulled out but am interesting everyone’s ideas on how to maximize the display? I was thinking about plastic stadium type displays so that they could have 2 or three rows of different heights. I’d like to be able to visually see my bottles and still make it easier to grab a bottle I’m interested in. I’m also wondering if alphabetical order makes sense just so I know where to start looking? I have a call into my closet guy to see if we could put drawer slides in the fragrance shelves to also make it easier to see and grab. I’d love to hear all thoughts and suggestions. Thank you all 🙏

15. Store your fragrances properly For me, proper storage is one of the easiest ways to protect a fragrance collection, especially if you plan on keeping bottles for years. You don’t need anything complicated or expensive; you just want to protect the fragrance from the things that can speed up deterioration. The biggest things I try to avoid are direct sunlight, excessive heat, and constant temperature changes. Leaving a bottle sitting in a sunny window, inside a hot car, or somewhere that regularly gets very warm is much harder on the fragrance than simply keeping it in a normal room. I prefer a cool, dark cabinet, drawer, or closet where the temperature stays fairly consistent. You don’t have to keep fragrances refrigerated. A normal climate-controlled room is perfectly fine, and stability is more important than trying to keep the bottles extremely cold. I also wouldn’t make the bathroom my first choice. The fragrance inside a properly sealed bottle isn’t going to suddenly be ruined by a little humidity, but bathrooms can go through repeated changes in heat and moisture from showers. Over time, that environment can also be harder on boxes, labels, and packaging. If you still have the original box, there’s nothing wrong with keeping the bottle in it either. The box gives you another layer of protection from light, although it isn’t necessary if the bottles are already stored inside a dark cabinet, dresser, or closet. And one thing I definitely wouldn’t do is repeatedly move bottles between very cold and very warm environments. I’d rather keep them at a consistent room temperature than constantly expose them to big temperature swings. For me, it comes down to something simple: keep your fragrances cool, dark, and stable. You spent good money on them, so give them an environment where they can stay in good condition for years.
