Martin “Buggsy” Goldstein finished what others ordered. Murder, Inc. enforcer out of Brooklyn under Lepke and Anastasia. 1939: strangled and burned Irving “Puggy” Feinstein with Pittsburgh Phil. Walked into Sing Sing’s electric chair June 12, 1941, still cursing the rats. Current doesn’t negotiate. Martin “Buggsy” Goldstein (1905–1941) was a Brooklyn gangster and killer associated with Murder, Inc., the network of hitmen that carried out murders for organized crime leaders during the 1930s. Born Meyer Goldstein, he grew up in East New York, Brooklyn, and became a close criminal associate of Abe “Kid Twist” Reles. Goldstein belonged to the Brooklyn underworld that supplied killers to Louis “Lepke” Buchalter and Albert Anastasia. Murder, Inc. included both Jewish and Italian gangsters; Goldstein’s importance came from his place in that enforcement network and his association with Reles. His downfall came when Reles became a prosecution witness in 1940. Reles implicated Goldstein and fellow killer Harry “Pittsburgh Phil” Strauss in the murder of Irving “Puggy” Feinstein. Both were convicted of first-degree murder in September 1940 and sentenced to death. Goldstein and Strauss were executed in the electric chair at Sing Sing on June 12, 1941. They were among the first Murder, Inc. defendants executed as the prosecutions dismantled the killing network.
