Features vs Benefits: What Does Your Website Communicate?
One common website copy mistake is listing what a product or service has without explaining why the customer should care.
Here's the difference:
A feature describes what you offer. A benefit explains how it helps the customer.
For example, if you're a website designer:
❌ Feature: “Mobile-responsive website design.”
✅ Benefit: “Your website works smoothly on phones, making it easier for visitors to explore your services and contact you.”
Another example:
❌ Feature: “Automated email marketing.”
✅ Benefit: “Follow up with potential customers automatically, so fewer enquiries get forgotten.”
Try this 2-minute website exercise:
1. Pick one service or product on your website.
2. Find three features you've listed.
3. For each feature, ask: “So what does this mean for my customer?”
4. Rewrite the answer in simple, customer-focused language.
Don't just tell visitors what your business does. Help them understand why it matters to them.
Your turn: Drop your website below. I'll review 3 sites and suggest one feature-to-benefit improvement for each.
What is one feature on your website that could be explained better?
