Match #58 is the second Quarterfinal in the main bracket, and this one hurts: Chanel Pour Monsieur EDP versus Terre d'Hermès Eau Givrée.

Two very special fragrances—and two houses for which I am an unapologetic fanboy.

Chanel Pour Monsieur is elegance, subtlety, and restraint. Citrus, spices, woods, and vetiver come together in a fragrance that never needs to raise its voice. The opening isn't necessarily the star of the show, but give it some time. The drydown is wonderfully smooth, refined, and sophisticated. It's the fragrance equivalent of impeccable manners.

Eau Givrée comes at you from the opposite direction. That opening blast of citron is absolutely gorgeous—bright, energetic, almost icy—before juniper and Timut pepper lead into the woody, mineral character of the Terre d'Hermès DNA. It's fresh without being generic and distinctive without becoming difficult to wear.

I've become a huge admirer of both during this tournament. And depending upon the day, I could easily make an argument for either one.

But today I'm putting on my Hermès fanboy hat and wearing it proudly. Terre d'Hermès Eau Givrée advances to the Semifinals.

Chanel Pour Monsieur EDP drops into the second-chance bracket, so thankfully I don't have to say goodbye to it just yet.

Two special fragrances. One very difficult decision.
