About 60 degrees this morning as I head northwest toward Kingman, and Santal 33 felt like the right choice for the drive. Those dry woods, soft leather and aromatic spice fit the cool morning air, and it should carry me through the trip back down into the Phoenix area. This is my backup bottle. With the size of my collection, actually emptying a bottle is pretty unusual, especially a fragrance I’ve owned for a long time. Santal 33 is one of those exceptions. That says more about how much I enjoy wearing it than any rating could. The scent: Santal 33 brings together sandalwood and cedar with cardamom, iris, violet and a leathery, musky character. Think dry, textured woods with a little spice and a softer floral edge. The sandalwood gives it some smoothness, but this isn’t a sugary, creamy sandalwood fragrance. It has that rugged yet comfortable character that makes it recognizable. Le Labo describes the composition around smoky woods, spice, leather and musk. What I appreciate is that it has personality without needing to be dressed up. It makes sense with casual clothes, an early start and a long stretch of road. Longevity, projection and sillage: As a general wear guide, roughly 8-12 hours is a reasonable expectation, although individual results vary. Projection is usually most noticeable early on, then gradually becomes a softer woody presence. The sillage that trail left behind while moving is part of its appeal: it can remain noticeable even after the initial push settles. Community feedback supports good longevity and a noticeable trail, with some wearers reporting around twelve hours. Those are general reports, rather than a timed result from today’s drive.
