Anthropic dropped another one today.
The second model in the 5.5 family.
And this one's the workhorse, not the show horse.
Faster. Cheaper per task. Same price tag.
Let me break it down.

Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5.5, and it beat the flagship on coding.
Anthropic released Claude Sonnet 5.5 today, the second model in its Claude 5.5 family, one week after Opus 5.5. The price is unchanged at 2 dollars per million input tokens and 10 per million output tokens ~ but it generates output over 30% faster and needs fewer tokens to finish the same work, cutting the total cost of a task by as much as 30%.
The benchmarks are the story here. Sonnet 5.5 scored 70.6% on Terminal-Bench 4.0, the agentic coding test, leaping past Sonnet 5's 10.3% and actually beating flagship Opus 5.5's 66.4%. On the GDPval test it landed at 1,844 ~ two points behind Opus 5.5's 1,846. A mid-tier model hanging with the flagship.
A couple of honest caveats. Sonnet 5.5 is built for well-scoped everyday work ~ fixing bugs, polishing docs, building decks, editing spreadsheets. Opus 5.5 stays the choice for the complex stuff that needs careful judgment. And note: this is the first Sonnet model subject to the same cybersecurity safeguards as Fable and Opus, and it's available on AWS, Google Cloud, and Azure with zero data retention.
Why it matters to you: the pitch has shifted from token price to cost-per-job ~ the same budget now covers more work. And the pattern keeps repeating: mid-tier models keep catching the flagships. The AI you can actually afford is becoming the AI that can actually do the job.

๐ฌ If Sonnet 5.5 handles the everyday work at a fraction of the cost, where would you point it first?
