August SAT Improvement
I'm so excited to share that I improved my score within 2 months! I am planning on taking the October SAT to superscore my math score to hit 1500. PSA: There is no "shortcut" to improve. I spent 10 hours studying each day. Here are a couple of tips I have:
English:
  • They ALWAYS recycle passages. As long as you understand the harder passages, you will be able to answer the questions that change.
  • For mod 2 always start vocab —> grammar —> passages
For the grammar section, you always check in this order:
  1. Run-on sentences. (. ; ,FANBOYS) Make sure you match up one subject per verb, and -ing verbs are NOT a verb!
  2. - ,
  3. Odd one out (3 Plural, 1 Singular)
  • Be careful with complex lists. (New York, US; Seoul, SK; and Shanghai, China)
  • When you come across hard passages, always write down notes! You have scrap paper! And you can cross out double-comma filler words. And pay attention to texts in parentheses because usually they are very relevant.
  • Keep track of the subjects within the hard questions!
  • This is ultra-specific, but know the word equivocal. It always pops up on tests.
Math:
  • If you are in the high 600s, just grind hard questions only. You are likely making errors on easy questions and have a hard time with time management, but at some point, the questions just turn into a game of pattern recognition.
Ultra-specific tips:
  • If a quadratic has 0 solutions, set the discriminant (b^2-4ac) to be less than 0
  • If a quadratic has 1 solution, set the discriminant (b^2-4ac) to be equal to 0
  • If a quadratic has 2 solutions, set the discriminant (b^2-4ac) to be greater than 0
  • With two similar shapes, the similarity ratio is a/b, the area ratio is a^2/b^2, the volume ratio is a^3/b^3
  • The sum of the solutions in a quadratic is -b/a
  • The product of the solutions in a quadratic is c/a
