Soap vs. Detergent: There Is a Difference
Most of what's sold as "soap" isn't soap. Check your shower: if the label says "beauty bar" or "body wash," it's legally a detergent — the company can't call it soap.
Real soap is one recipe, thousands of years old: fat or oil reacted with lye. The result is a fatty-acid salt. Its weakness: it leaves scum in hard water, and it's alkaline — around pH 9 to 10 against your skin's natural acidity of about pH 5.
Detergents are synthetic cleaning molecules, engineered during the World Wars when fats were scarce. They work in any water, at any pH, and clean more aggressively.
Here's what matters for your body: neither one meaningfully absorbs (see Post 01). The real difference is stripping. Aggressive detergents remove more of your skin's oil barrier — that's why some men get cracked hands from dish liquid but not from plain soap. It's outside-in barrier damage, not inside poisoning.
Practical call for dads running bath time: fragrance-free and mild beats "natural" and harsh, whichever chemistry it is. Then close the browser tab and get back to the things with mountains of evidence behind them — strength training and honest weight loss beat a perfect soap shelf every day of the week.
