The Pause that Changes Everything!
Mindfulness is the practice of paying deliberate, present-moment attention to what is happening right now... in your body, your mind, and your surroundings... and choosing how you respond to it.
That SPACE between what happens and how you respond, that is where your POWER LIVES.
One of the Buddhist's teaching most relevant for nurses is this: SUFFERING comes from our resistance to what is happening.
When the shift is hard, the staff is short, there's no support and the family is difficult, the mind starts fighting reality.
MINDFULNESS teaches you to PAUSE, OBSERVE, and CHOOSE your response instead of reacting from exhaustion and overwhelm.
Think of it this way.
The mind is like water.
Agitated... it is murky.
Still... it becomes clear.
Mindfulness is learning to still that water.
And when a nurse learns to do that consistently it changes everything, not just her shifts, but her sleep, her relationships, her mornings, and the way she carries her work home.
Try this ANYWHERE, ANYTIME: Notice the moment you feel reactive.
PAUSE... take one slow exhale.
OBSERVE... notice what is going on around you and within you.
CHOOSE... how you want to respond.
3 steps. 2 seconds. Available in any moment of any shift and every moment in between.
💬 QUESTIONS:
When during your day do you feel most reactive?
How would your life change if you had two seconds of space before you responded?
