Looking Beyond the Behavior
October is ADHD Awareness Month, and I've been thinking a lot about how easy it is to focus on what a child is doing instead of wondering what might be making something difficult for them.
“Won't listen.”
“Won't get started.”
“Can't stay focused.”
“Overreacts.”
Sometimes there may be something underneath the behavior that we can't immediately see.
It could be executive functioning, overwhelm, transitions, emotional regulation, difficulty getting started, or simply needing a different kind of support.
I'm trying to practice asking:
“What might be making this hard?”
instead of only asking:
“Why won't they do it?”
This is actually one of the things we'll be exploring throughout October inside Neurodiverse Learning Hub as we focus on Understanding ADHD — Beyond the Behavior.
💬 Has changing the question ever changed the way you looked at a behavior?
