My Accusation
I accuse Claire Blackwood of causing the events that led to Evelyn’s death.

I do not think Claire necessarily intended to kill her mother. I think Evelyn’s death resulted from everything that happened to her that night.
Motive
Claire recently asked Evelyn for $25,000 and was refused. She also expected to inherit Blackwood House, but Evelyn was changing her estate plan so the house would be placed into a historical trust.
Saturday night, Evelyn planned to reveal the estate changes, the problems with the business accounts, and the fact that Richard was not Claire’s biological father. Claire stood to lose the house she always believed would eventually belong to her.
Drugging
I think Marcus may have drugged Evelyn, although there is no proof showing where the zolpidem came from. Any of the five people could have had access to the medication.
Marcus knew Evelyn was investigating suspicious transfers, duplicate billing, and materials charged to projects where they never arrived. He may have drugged her so he could remove, replace, or return financial documents without her stopping him.
Marcus went to Evelyn’s window around 10:12–10:15 and saw her alive with her head down at the desk. I think he may have been checking whether the medication was working before attempting to handle the financial records.
I do not think the drugger and the person responsible for the later confrontation had to be the same person.
First Injury and Fatal Injury
I think Claire entered the study and confronted Evelyn about the family secret and estate changes. Claire burned the revised will and Evelyn’s handwritten notes because those documents showed that Blackwood House would no longer pass to her.
During the confrontation, Claire struck Evelyn with the bronze horse. That caused the first bleeding injury but did not kill her.
Claire left Evelyn alive. Because Evelyn had zolpidem and alcohol in her system and had already suffered a head injury, she later became unsteady and fell backward into the stone hearth. I think the crash around 10:30 was probably Evelyn’s fatal fall, although nobody actually saw what caused the sound.
Claire may not have intended for Evelyn to die, but the first injury contributed to the chain of events that caused her fatal fall.
Locked Room
I do not think anyone entered or escaped through the window.
Marcus may have used the study door to handle the financial records, and Claire used the door during her confrontation with Evelyn. Both left while Evelyn was still alive.
After Claire left, Evelyn locked the study door herself because she was frightened, upset, or wanted privacy. That explains why the deadbolt was genuinely engaged and why the working key remained inside the room. Evelyn then fell into the hearth after the study was already locked.
The window mattered because Marcus used it to watch Evelyn and possibly check whether the drug had affected her. His visit also explains the disturbed flower bed and footprints.
Five Stories
Claire was hiding where she really was between 9:38 and 10:51. She claimed she stayed in her bedroom the entire time, but nobody confirmed it. I think her missing time is connected to the burned will and the first injury.
Daniel was protecting Evelyn’s private estate and family information. He was alone in the library, only about 28 feet from the study door. His verified phone call ended around 10:18, leaving him approximately 12 minutes before the crash. He had time to enter the study, but there is no proof that he did. His pen only proves that the pen was in the study—not that Daniel was there when Evelyn was injured.
Thomas was hiding that he took scrap materials without permission. That explains why Evelyn fired him, but I do not think it connects him to her death.
Lillian was hiding that she took the photograph showing their father’s letter. The family secret explains her argument with Evelyn and the sisters’ estrangement. I do not think she caused Evelyn’s death.
Marcus was hiding the unauthorized financial ledgers, his false story about making phone calls, and the fact that he went to Evelyn’s window. I think he may have drugged Evelyn so he could control or replace financial documents, but I do not think he caused the physical confrontation involving the bronze horse.
Final Statement
I accuse Claire Blackwood of causing the events that led to Evelyn Blackwood’s death because she stood to lose Blackwood House, burned the revised will, and struck Evelyn with the bronze horse during a confrontation.
I believe Marcus may have drugged Evelyn for a separate reason involving the financial records. Claire left Evelyn alive, and Evelyn locked the study herself. Impaired by zolpidem, alcohol, and the first head injury, Evelyn later lost her balance and fell into the hearth. Claire may not have intended to kill her mother, but her actions contributed to the fatal fall.
