Today we're going live for the first episode of our vegan skincare series. 🌿✨ We're beginning with biology rather than products. Before we talk about what to put on your skin, it helps to understand what your skin is actually doing. It's your largest organ, and it's in constant conversation with the rest of you: your gut, your hydration, your mineral levels, your sleep. Research on the gut-skin axis has linked the balance of bacteria in the digestive system to conditions like acne and eczema, which is part of why caring for the skin so often begins on the inside. 🔬 I'll walk through the plant-based approach to nourishing skin from within. We'll look at the foods that support healthy skin cell turnover, the ones that tend to feed inflammation you can see on the surface, and the minerals your skin leans on most, beginning with zinc, which has a central role in skin repair and renewal. 🌱 Foundation first, then the external care. If you'd like to join, drop "skin" below and I'll see you there. 🌿 If you'd like to look deeper into this yourself: - Gut–Skin Axis: Current Knowledge of the Interrelationship between Microbial Dysbiosis and Skin Conditions - Zinc and Zinc Transporters in Dermatology

There is a long nerve that begins in the brainstem and wanders down through the heart, the lungs, and the gut. It is called the vagus nerve, and it is the main pathway of the parasympathetic nervous system, the part of you responsible for rest, recovery, digestion, and calm. 🌿 When that pathway is active, the body settles more easily: sleep comes deeper, recovery comes quicker, and stress passes through without lingering. When we live under constant pressure, shallow breathing, and poor rest, it tends to be quieter, and the body stays a little more on edge than it needs to be. The encouraging part is that this is something we can practice. A 2022 systematic review and meta-analysis pooled the research on slow, voluntary breathing and found that it reliably increases heart rate variability, a widely used marker of vagal activity. The effect was clearest at around six breaths per minute, which is about what you reach with a slow count of four in and eight out. Heart rate variability is an indirect measure, and researchers are still refining how best to use it, but the pattern is consistent. Other practices have long traditions behind them: a splash of cold water on the face and neck, humming, singing, gargling, and an unhurried, plant-rich way of eating that keeps the body's inflammation low. The research on these is earlier and less settled than the breathing studies, so think of them as gentle things to explore. Micro-challenge: Tonight before bed, take ten slow breaths: four counts in, eight counts out. Notice where your body softens, often somewhere around the sixth breath. 🌙

Sunday · Reset & Intention
A full month has passed. 🌱 Before setting any new intention, let's pause and acknowledge that you're still here. Showing up, again and again, is rare, and it means something, even on the days it didn't feel like much. ✨ Here are a few ancient practices to bring into the week, grouped by what you might need most. Calming 🍵 - Pranayama (India): slow, deliberate breathing. Alternate nostril breathing is the classic starting point. - Qigong or tai chi (China): slow, flowing movement paired with breath. It calms the body without asking for stillness. - Tea ceremony (Japan): preparing and drinking one cup with full attention. - Reset 🌿 - Abhyanga (Ayurveda): warm oil self-massage, often done in the evening or before bathing. - Sabbath rest (Hebrew tradition): a full day set apart from work and striving. - Shinrin-yoku (Japan): slow, unhurried time among trees. - Intention 🙏 - Zazen (Zen): seated meditation, simply watching the breath and the mind. - Evening review (Stoic): Seneca and Marcus Aurelius asked what went well, what didn't, and what to carry into tomorrow. - Prayer or quiet reflection: found in nearly every tradition, a way of setting your direction before the week begins. - Share below if you've tried any of these, or if you have one that isn't listed. Someone here may be curious about it. 🌍

There's a small black seed that has been used for over two thousand years, and studied more closely in recent decades than most people realize. 🌿 Nigella sativa — black seed, or kalonji — contains a compound called thymoquinone. A comprehensive review pulling together the existing research found consistent anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects across dozens of studies, with antimicrobial and immune-modulating activity showing up in several others. It has held a place in Islamic, Ayurvedic, and African traditional medicine for generations. In Islamic tradition, it's spoken of as a remedy for every illness but death. If you'd like to try it: about half a teaspoon of cold-pressed black seed oil daily. It has a strong, bitter taste, so many prefer to take it on its own and follow with water. Give it a couple of weeks before deciding how it's working for you. When choosing an oil, look for cold-pressed and unrefined, kept in a dark glass bottle — that tends to preserve its quality best. ✨ If you already use black seed oil, I'd love to hear what you've noticed. 💬 If you'd like to look deeper into this yourself: - Comprehensive review of antioxidant effects of Nigella sativa and thymoquinone across disorders - Review of Nigella sativa's therapeutic potential and clinical applications

Thursday · Win & Progress Thread
Almost a month has passed since many of you began this journey together. That alone is worth pausing on. 🎉 This week, let's reflect together: what has actually shifted for you — in your body, your thinking, your habits — since you joined this community? Nothing is too small to share. A quieter mind counts just as much as a change you can see in the mirror. Whatever comes up for you, we'd love to hear it below. 🌱

For me. I've been seeing that there is only a thin barrier between what you think is capable and what you think is impossible, and each time you cross it you are surprised at how thin it was.
