👋 HOW TO WELCOME NEW SKOOL COMMUNITY MEMBERS
There isn’t one “correct” way to welcome a new community member. Different communities use different approaches depending on their size, personality, and available time. For example: • A personal welcome post can celebrate the member and create a visible first conversation • A private DM can feel more personal and give them direction without putting them on display • A pinned Start Here post gives every member the same clear path and works well at scale • A recurring welcome thread can introduce several members without filling the feed • A live welcome or onboarding call can create connection in a higher-touch community • A combination can use one method for connection and another for direction The format matters less than what the welcome helps the member feel: • I’m in the right place • I can see how to begin • It feels safe to participate If you use public welcome posts, don’t repeat someone’s biography, application answers, business details, or private information. Give them room to introduce themselves in their own words. If you use DMs or a Start Here post, avoid overwhelming them with a sales pitch or ten different links. A welcome only works if the member notices it, understands it, and knows how to respond. How do you currently welcome new members? Public post, private DM, pinned Start Here post, recurring thread, live onboarding, a combination—or something else? Tell us what you use and why it fits your community. 👇

There is a reason why I have a 3-step onboarding process. It has worked for months and I am very proud of it. The only change I recently made is intentionally including the answer to one of their entry questions because it helps let the current members know why the new one is joining us - connection, collaboration, and/or growth. You can say "don't do that" but each community has their specific goals and promises and should do what they feel helps accomplish those goals and promises IMHO.

@Joshua Guerrero retention is currently 100% for members who came in through free trials in July. This was before I changed my group back to free entry - I upgraded them to Premium as a courtesy (because I felt bad). But I am changing my group model again and going back to paid on October 1st. Those members I upgraded will stay on the Premium tier. I am on the fence about whether to enable a free trial again or not. It worked well the first time but the monthly rate was a lot lower than what I am planning to go with this time.

Big welcome to @Melissa Eichbauer! 👋🏽 Melissa — really glad you found your way in. Looks like you’ve already taken the fun/scary step of actually putting your community out into the world 😅 So I’m curious… What’s one little sign that would make you think, “Okay… this thing might actually be working”? 👀 Happy to have you here, Melissa! 🙌🏽

Say hey to @Harold Sconiers! 👋 Harold — glad you made your way over here. You’ve been around Skool long enough to know the neighborhood, so I’ll skip the grand tour. 😅 I’m curious about one thing: If you could run one really small test this week just to see how people respond, what would you want to test? 👀 Glad to have you in here, Harold! 🙌

@Joshua Guerrero I am also co-hosting a summit in October and am struggling with whether that group "has to be free" to eliminate any friction of people joining.

@Joshua Guerrero very good points. The theme of the summit partially aligns in different ways with both of my communities. I am in the process of deciding what "next steps after the summit" will look like.

Big welcome to @Nakada Minoru! 🙌 Nakada — glad you found your way here. 😊 Since you’re just getting started on Skool, I’d make your first stop the Start Here post before digging into the Classroom. That’ll give you the lay of the land without making things complicated. And as you look around: What are you hoping to get a little clearer on first? 👀 Glad to have you here, Nakada!
