VERTICAL WRITERS NEEDED
Over the last month, Screenwriting Staffing has posted several jobs specifically for vertical screenwriters. Most of these are listed under their premium services at $25 a month. If you are looking for a way to get into verticals, this is a good path. If you're not ready to sign up, join their free newsletter. They send out a list of jobs several times a week. Some don't require you to sign up for the premium service. RECENT JOB POSTINGS PAID VERTICAL DRAMA WRITER WANTED. An experienced writer is needed for a male-oriented fantasy vertical series featuring hidden identity, supernatural powers, and an underdog’s rise. The concept, full synopsis, and initial episode outlines are provided. The writer will complete the remaining outlines and full screenplay within 2–3 weeks, ideally by August 24. Vertical drama or short-form experience is required. VERTICAL SERIES WRITER WANTED. Your Proof of Concept Is Your Real Pitch
StoryTellers, Kane Parsons and Curry Barker didn't get studio deals because they wrote great query letters. They built an undeniable proof-of-concept on YouTube first. Short, visceral videos that proved they could generate scares. You don't need a million YouTube subscribers to leverage this strategy as a writer. Here's your action plan: 1. Audit your script (locations. Cut any scene requiring a new, expensive set unless it's absolutely plot-essential. Front-load the tension. No more slow-burn openers. Fracture the normal world immediately. Embrace constraints. If your characters can't see the monster, the audience's anxiety increases. Limitations are creative fuel. 2. Find a hungry director. Someone who wants to build their reel as badly as you want to sell your script. 3. Partner with local actors. Film students, theater grads, your cousin who does improv. 4. Shoot a 3-minute scene from your feature spec on an iPhone. Not the whole movie. One scene. The core scare. The moment everything fractures. Why? Because proving your concept works on screen separates you from the thousands of PDFs sitting unread in executive inboxes. It's something tangible. Studios are desperate for lean, original ideas. The door is wide open for relentless storytelling. StoryTellers, what's one step you could take this week to prove your concept works? Drop it in the comments.

Love this, @Melissa Butler Melissa. It's a great reminder that sometimes the best pitch is simply showing the work. That's the mindset I'm leaning into.
Chasing Trends - Part 2
StoryTellers, let's get tactical on trend-chasing. You'll hear those in the industry say: "We need something like Backrooms. Liminal. Viral. Franchise-able." So should you drop your passion project to write a liminal-horror spec? Here's my honest Pros & Cons breakdown: PRO: Market Validation A trending subgenre means there's proven audience appetite. You're not guessing. That lowers risk for buyers and for you. CON: The Lag Problem Film/TV development moves slow. The "Backrooms" wave peaked online in 2022-2023. By the time your spec is written, read, and shopped, the trend may be saturated or dead. PRO: Skill Building Even if it doesn't sell, writing a tight trend-piece teaches pacing, tone control, and genre mechanics. You level up as a craftsperson. CON: The Clone Trap If you're just remixing what's already out there, you're competing with 500 other writers doing the exact same thing. Differentiation becomes nearly impossible. PRO: Door-Opening Potential A well-timed spec can get you meetings, reps, or staffing — even if the project itself dies. The opportunity is sometimes worth more than the script. CON: Creative Drift Chase too many trends and you wake up with a portfolio of scripts you don't care about. No passion = no persistence = no career longevity. My take? The writers who win don't chase trends, they anticipate them. They write what genuinely obsesses them, and sometimes that obsession happens to overlap with the market. StoryTellers, where do you land? Are you writing to the market right now, or staying in your lane?
