Everybody, let’s talk about it: 🧵 I’ve been with my company for almost 3 years. Strong performance record, consistent results, and my manager actively encouraged me to apply for a higher role. I was told directly that the position was essentially mine and that the application and interview process were just formal hoops to jump through. Then out of nowhere, the role was given to an outside hire- a Black guy who nobody in our department has ever heard of. I’m sure, he’s probably a great guy, but there is no way he’s more fit for this specific role than someone who has actually been in the trenches here doing the work. It just doesn’t seem fair. It’s actually not fair. His resume said that he has a bachelors from a school in Alabama. I have an undergrad and masters from OU. Plus more experience in this field. It’s hard not to feel like it was a textbook diversity move over actual merit, bypassing qualified internal people who earned their spot just to check a box for leadership. I am NOT a Trump supporter but I’m starting to understand why it’s necessary to get rid of DEI and affirmative action. It gives other groups an unfair advantage over us who earned it through effort. I’ve been really hurt by the decision. It feels like a personal attack and I was deceived. Myself and our current team lead (who was on the interview panel) looked over resumes together before the interviews and there were some pretty good solid applicants but they were all external. Mine still stood out with very little effort. We (legally) made sure of that. We weren’t discriminating. I wanted to know more about the person who is suddenly managing our team. I’m not going to lie, I did some digging to figure out how someone outside the loop even got in the door. Turns out, he’s actually related to someone else at the company. It wasn't my direct hiring manager, but it’s pretty obvious they schemed behind closed doors to orchestrate this and slide him in. I also saw that he had 3 OPEN child support cases, with different initials for each kid- so presumably three different mothers- and he’s behind on payments for all of them. How can someone who doesn't take care of their own kids be trusted to lead a team of 15?

Everybody, let’s talk about it: 🧵 Hi Chamieka, I could use some very very urgent advice. I’m sitting at my son’s basketball practice and the dilemma I’m having will present itself shortly. There is a Black boy on my son’s team. He’s a great kid, he and my kid are pretty close and he’s the captain of the team. We’ve had him over our house many times and he’s even spent the night before over the road tournaments. The problem is that he doesn’t live in our neighborhood. Practice gets over late and he usually takes the bus home. Every time we ride past him I feel an overwhelming amount of guilt. But I also wonder where his parents are and why they don’t pick up their kid? It’s not safe. Sometimes we aren’t getting out of practice until after 8. There is a group of us moms who rotate bringing in snacks and water. We feel a responsibility to these boys and their success. But how can we say that if the star player (my son is pretty good too, though! I’ll talk more about this) has transportation issues getting back and forth? A few weeks ago we decided that each mom would take turns taking him home. He lives in inner city Baltimore and it is not a great area. We wouldn’t go to these areas in the daytime and certainly don’t want to be there at night but we did it because he’s a good kid. That alone may not be enough anymore. It’s only been a few weeks but moms that agreed to do it are dropping like flies. Saying they have this obligation or that obligation or simply just need to get home and get dinner started. It’s exhausting and heartbreaking. We asked the coach and assistant coach if they would be willing to drop off once a week and they cited a school policy that strictly prohibits them from doing so and I understand that. So now he’s arriving at practices late or not at all. There have been talks about replacing him as captain due to unreliability. They said, my son would be up next and I know how bad he wants this. It’s his senior year and he has a few offers for schools since last year. We aren’t rich to say the least so a full ride scholarship would be a true blessing.

And it took public backlash — not internal review — to get it pulled. In less than a day. That’s the pattern we keep seeing. Big retailers roll something out, Black folks call it out, and only then does it disappear quietly with no real accountability. No statement. No apology. Just... gone, like it never happened.
