AMA - My lessons from ~1 year of building a coaching business and making my first 4 figure sale
Hey all! Joined this program about 2 ish years ago and wanted to report back with some lessons about my business and what worked for me. Hopefully these lessons will work for you as well, as most of them were extremely painful to learn, and I was so lost at the time so I'm hoping this will help someone who was in my shoes. I will talk about: 1. Answers to my previous questions 2. How I landed my first 4 figure sale (no gatekeeping) Looking back at my history in 2024, I asked 2 questions: 1. How are you actually practising coaching? I decided to enroll in an ICF accredited course. It was 6 months and I live in Vancouver, BC, so in north america it was recognized. I am not saying you need to go buy a course (that would defeat the entire point of this community), but what was invaluable was the small community and groups I had where we would meetup every sunday to practise peer coaching with each other, for 6 weeks. We would apply what we learned in the course, and do 3 way sessions (2 people coach each other, 1 person gives feedback). I learned very quickly from others. 2. How did you find your niche? For this, I got vague answers like "your niche finds you". I want to rephrase that: you niche does not find you, you attempt to go find it, guess, and eventually you'll hit something that resonates. For me, I was extremely interested in relationships. My path was: loneliness coach -> friendships coach -> relationships coach -> dating coach for asian men. I can talk more about how I got there if you're curious, but I'm sure what you'd be more interested in is.... How I landed my first 4 figure sale. The steps were simple, all followed from Alex Hormozi's content. 1. Identify your target audience. This is extremely important because if you do not know who you're targeting, you do not know what their problems are and therefore do not know how to "sell" your services to them. 2. Identify what "value" is to them. There's an equation for this which I'll go through below. 3. Do warm outreach. This means reaching out to anyone in your contacts list. I used Instagram primarily 4. Start for free. People don't know who you are and don't have a reason to trust you. Make it easy for them. Start free. 5. Once you've proven value to your free clients, start charging. I asked them at the end of a session, how would you rate the value you got out of this session from 1 to 10? And before they answered: what does a 10 look like to you? If you keep getting 10's, you know you can charge. 6. Do more warm outreach until you get more free clients. I reached out to about ~160 people before I got my first 4 figure sale.
How are you actually "practising" coaching?
I've been I told multiple times both within this community / program and outside of it that you can't just learn coaching by watching videos and reading a book, you actually have to practice it. So I was wondering: how are you guys getting this practice in? Are you practicing with each other? Is there a thread somewhere that I missed or a module I haven't gotten to yet that talks more about this? Are you doing these calls mainly through audio like a phone call, or using discord, or through video using something like zoom or Google meets? Curious how other people have approached this and what you've learned!
How did you find your niche? (Or your current niche)
It's a question I've been thinking about recently. For those that have a niche, how did you discover this? For those that don't, what are your current plans to try to figure this out? My current approach is to coach people I think are coachable and then niche down after enough clients/experience. I don't know how this will pan out as it sounds inefficient so I thought I'd ask y'all for input!

@Muslimah Tobias in an earlier comment @Ray Sims said the same and for some reason I really resonate with this. I find usually I try to plan everything out before doing and with my exploratory coaching calls recently I've found a lot of joy in just taking action and "trying the process" if that makes sense. Thanks for sharing!
Relationships conference (Vancouver)
This is a long shot but I thought I'd ask since this event gives me coach vibes. Anyone going to this conference? I'll be there as a volunteer! (Not sure if external links are allowed, admins pls lmk if not) https://realloveready.com/in-bloom-a-love-and-relationships-summit-2024

Leaning into the uncomfortable….
I am so curious you fearless, current and future coach, what comes up for you? At first, I thought the point system was really overwhelming! For someone who used to be uncomfortable with a visibility to others - this was a daunting task. But instead of running away from it, I decided to lean into it, and I must say, I’m actually enjoying myself :) I would love to hear from others in what has it been for you that you had to overcome discomfort and lean into it? how did it make you feel?

I use social media often (might be a bad thing for others haha) so I've had practise with being open online, but have never used Skool before. Ive heard of it but never had a reason to use it until now so I was super curious to how it worked It's funny how we're forced to interact with people at the start. I felt friction cuz I just wanted to level up to quickly unlock modules but am actually starting to quite enjoy this LOL. It's like whenever built Skool knew that one of the hardest parts to building a community is to make people interact - which u won't have to do if they all want to interact on their own!
