🐦‍⬛ Visible Friday #24: The Angry Video I Didn’t Post This Week
This is the video I’m not posting this week. I’m sharing it here with you Vizzy D’s instead. Because sometimes visibility work is also about: knowing thyself. I’ve had a barrage lately of angry DMs from funeral directors, full of accusations, assumptions and some fairly wild interpretations of what I’m doing. And honestly? It triggered me. And swung my Taurean passive-aggression into full swing… 🐂😂 Some of my anger was warranted. But after making this video, I realised I was about to do something I often encourage you guys NOT to do: Create content for the people who are annoying you. 😅 So I slept on it. I shared my frustration with some trusted peers & friends. And they helped me realign where I wanted to put my energy. Because the people I’m really here to speak to aren’t the people I’m arguing with in my head. They’re the families who need to know what kind of person I am. They’re the peers who are looking for a different way of doing things. They’re the people who might see one of my posts and think: “Oh. I think I’d like to work with her.” 🐦‍⬛ We talk about this a lot in the Social Reels Masterclass, but your social media is your shopfront window. And families, colleagues and potential collaborators are looking through that window all the time. So this week, I want you to notice: Who are you actually speaking to? And perhaps more importantly: Who have you accidentally started creating content for? The person who criticised you? The competitor who gets under your skin? The colleague who disagrees with you? The imaginary person you’re trying to prove something to? Or the people you actually want to reach? 🐦‍⬛ YOUR VISIBLE FRIDAY PROMPT Think of something you’ve posted recently, or wanted to post, and ask: Who was I really speaking to? Then ask: If the person I most want to work with walked into my shopfront window right now, would this content tell them something useful about me? And finally: What would I create if I stopped trying to prove something and started trying to connect?

I feel this so much when I post certain things online. I just hope the FDs out there stop being offended and have a look at how they operate. Love your work Amy 💕
Webinar: HOLDING FAMILIES THROUGH ASSISTED DYING
A reflection space for death care workers with Amy Firth & The Visible Death Worker Community This 90 minute virtual call is for death care practitioners and grief workers supporting, or looking to support, families eligible for the assisted dying process. 10am - 11:30am // Weds 9th September (AEST) REGISTER HERE: https://events.humanitix.com/holding-families-through-assisted-dying **NB: Please note this is not an information session for families seeking Voluntary Assisted Dying. This is a closed event for death care professionals looking to share and learn from each other, from both a professional and cultural perspective. ABOUT THE WEBINAR: Known here in Australia as Voluntary Assisted Dying (VAD), this practice goes by different names depending on where you're working from. Canada calls it MAID, Medical Assistance in Dying. In the US it's most often Medical Aid in Dying. New Zealand uses Assisted Dying. The Netherlands, Belgium and much of Europe still use the word euthanasia. Whatever the name where you are, the territory we're gathering to talk about is the same. VAD is relatively new here in Australia (available to families in my state of NSW since 2023) and many of us are still learning, still finding our footing in how we support and prepare families and accompany families in our death care role. Not so much with the practicalities of the process itself, but with everything that sits around it. The parts nobody hands you a manual for. This webinar presents an opportunity to hear from each other about the tender role we play when supporting these families, and what we can learn from each other in what we collectively witness in this particular strand of our work. Together we'll explore: - The Space Between Yes and Goodbye, supporting families who are counting down the nights - Continuity of care, from before, to death, to funeral, and beyond - VAD grief presenting as sudden death bereavement

🐦‍⬛ Visible Friday #13: Funerals Reimagined + Vizzy D Resource Library
Darlings - Happy Friday! I’ve got two tasty treats for you today, both ready & waiting for you in the Classroom tab. 🐦‍⬛ 1) Introducing: The Vizzy D Resource Library 🐦‍⬛ The *Vizzy D Resource Library* is a new shared space for the resources that have shaped how we think about death, grief and ceremony, built by this community, for this community. You can find it in the Classroom tab. It's meant to grow with whatever's actually shaping your practice right now, the book that changed how you show up with a family, the podcast episode you've sent to three colleagues, the poem you keep coming back to for readings. A shared shelf of books, podcasts, documentaries, readings, trainings and accounts that have shaped how we think about death, grief and ceremony. Comment your suggestions in the new *Vizzy D Resource Library* post pinned to the top of our community chat and we can together start breathing life into this exciting new global library for us all. 🐦‍⬛ 2) Funerals Reimagined: A Guide For Creating Meaningful Ceremonies🐦‍⬛ $27 AUD / $19 USD / £15 GBP I've been sitting on this for a while and I'm genuinely excited to finally share it with you. *Funerals Reimagined: A Guide to Creating Meaningful Ceremonies* Thirty pages. Seven real ceremonies. The three shifts that turn a funeral from something people sit through into something they help create. A worksheet of prompts to actually put into practice with families. The hard part wasn't the writing. It was the cutting. I could have made this three times longer, but I wanted something you could actually share with a family, or read yourself in one sitting between appointments, not another PDF that sits in a downloads folder unread. My hope is that it helps in a few different ways. Maybe there's a story or a framing in here that gives language to something you already know in your bones but haven't quite found the words for. Maybe it's something you can point a family towards when they're struggling to imagine anything beyond the standard traditional funeral service.

🐦‍⬛ Visible Friday #11: Whose Community Is This, Anyway?
Hello my darling Vizzy D's - ! We just ticked past 200 people in this little community. And we only started dreaming into all this eleven weeks ago. Eleven weeks. I keep sitting with that number, turning it over. When I started this I thought it was about visibility 'out there'. Being seen in our communities, online, in the industry. And it still is that. But watching this group take shape week by week, I'm noticing something else happening. We're becoming more visible to each other too. There are threads of connection forming here that I don't want to lose or let sit quiet in the comments and scroll past. So this week I want to slow down and ask you something honestly, because I don't want to build this community on guesses. 🐦‍⬛ Visibility Prompt for this week: What would genuinely serve you here? What do you actually want to get out of this group and the people in it? We're all coming at this work from different angles, different stages, different corners of the industry, so I know there's no single answer. But I'm keen to understand how we support each other well as this thing keeps growing... To get the conversation started, here are some shapes this could take. Pick as many as take your fancy, add your own, tell me what's missing... 1) Themed Deep Dives - ticketed online calls where we sit with one specific topic properly, instead of skimming past it in a scroll. Things like the trend toward direct cremation, VAD, business models in death care or the inner work this job demands of us. Sessions get recorded and made available in the classroom as ticketed Masterclass recordings afterwards, so the conversation keeps earning for the people who showed up and did the work. Profits shared amongst presenters. 2) Regular free drop-in calls - maybe every 6 to 8 weeks, no agenda beyond showing up. 3) One-to-one sessions with me - ticketed audit or planning sessions where we look at where you're at and map out what's next for you. 4) More self-paced courses - websites, newsletters, that kind of practical groundwork.

Hey @Amy Firth gosh so many options. I love the Deep Dive, more self paced courses, and also members hosting their own ticketed events. I'm not such a fan of the drop in sessions at this stage lol. I like an agenda!
Sondering festival - UK
Wow! Just reading about this and really want to go. Timing this year isn’t good for me. But sharing as I know the UK people here may be interested. Worth Travelling for too I reckon. Although Aus / Canada may be a bit far! https://www.thesonderingfestival.co.uk/
