I rarely share off site videos but after @Dee Shepherd recommended this speech in another group, I stopped what I was doing to listen. Reflecting on the lesson I learned that it isn't about making my bed. For me days were never the problem. I had struggled with insomnia my entire life. So my morning routine doesn't always include making my bed. Sometimes I crawl back into it. Sometimes I make my bed right before I go to bed. Then one little thing changed. I loathe waking up to dirty dishes so I set a new routine. I decided to end my days doing the dishes. Lots of nights I am tired and I think I'll skip it just this once. But it's our ritual. When the dogs hear the water they start to move towards the door. Sasha will come, splay out across the floor and watch me. Before I grab the tea towel, I call out to Selena. By the time I finished drying the few dishes she's found her way to the kitchen. Then they go out in the backyard to do their pee and we go to bed. I wish I'd known about this years ago. This simple routine has trained my body that it's time to go to sleep. Keeping one simple routine, not a huge change or a new medication. Just one simple routine for simple thing that I needed to do anyway, let me fall asleep at night. The bonus is every morning when I walk into the clean kitchen I feel a sense of accomplishment. I get to start my day feeling like I accomplished something yesterday. I get to know there was something that didn't get left undone. I know yesterday I planned for this peaceful beginning. I start my day with a gift from the past me. What's your Make Your Bed story?
