Part of being a bookkeeper isn’t just entering transactions and giving financials. It’s giving clean financials that make sense. I offer quality of earnings analysis and reporting to people who are buying a business. I just saved 2 people a 1.2M purchase price because of the skills I developed. Yes I have a bookkeeping firm but when you can see beyond bookkeeping then you provide value that AI can’t replace. Understanding accrual accounting vs cash basis is key. Timing of transactions especially revenue and payroll expense is huge. Makes the difference between a 509k purchase price and a 1M price.
Hey everyone! I have been thinking about running a promotion to help me get more clients. I was thinking something like 20% off clean up work or 1 free month after you sign up for monthly bookkeeping. What are your thoughts on this?
Interesting. Do small businesses google for bookkeeping services or do they ask their CPA or other business owners? I’m curious what people’s thoughts are.
Went 0 for 5 on pitches from 6/1-8/1. I was down. I was frustrated. Lack of pitch opportunities plus lack of conversion had me questioning things. Then first week of August I converted a small client set to start in a few months. Then a friend told me to remind myself I’m the best sales guy out there. I converted two the other day. Then yesterday I got a referral from someone I’ve never met. Then a referral that ghosted me in June responded back 10 minutes after I sent a third follow up and we’re discussing a meeting. Keep grinding. Keep pushing.
I acquired my firm on 1/6/26. It came with 650-700k of revenue so I had a running start. But day 1 I lost a $3k client and gained a $3k client. Since I started I've lost 4-5 clients and gained 5-6. It's been truly frustrating because the first 90 days I didn't gain a single client. I gained between 4/1-6/1. Then since 6/1 I had zero success pitching clients on discovery calls. 5-7 failed pitches. "Too expensive" or "my CPA will do it" or "i'll have my wife do it". But yesterday I got 2 verbal commits on a discovery call and 1 signed the contract yesterday evening. But the one who signed emailed me this morning wanting to talk about our contract after talking to his CPA wife. I am preparing myself for him to back out. Moral of the story is to keep grinding. Practice your pitch. Discover what works. Stay in a niche to start to show your expertise. My expertise is trust accounting/IOLTA since 40% of my clients are law firms and most bookkeepers don't have experience there. *I have 5-6 in the pipeline for the rest of the year due to people acquiring businesses. I have been building relationships so an update will come later*
Hi everyone! Curious on the communities thoughts on acquiring a new client. What process has worked for you: referral, advertising, cold call/email/message?
