🌿 The Daily Practice of Rest
🪷 Doing Nothing Is Okay Today, you have permission to do absolutely nothing. Not because you've earned it. Not because you've completed every task. Not because you've finally become exhausted enough to justify it. But because you are a human being, not a continuous production system. There will always be another task. Another idea. Another responsibility. Another opportunity to fill the silence. But not every open space needs to be occupied. Sometimes we can simply sit. Sip our coffee. Watch the sunlight move across the room. Listen to the birds. Enjoy our own company. No agenda. No outcome. No lesson that must be extracted from the experience. And we don't have to turn doing nothing into another form of productivity by insisting it must restore us, inspire us, or prepare us for tomorrow. Nothing is allowed to simply be nothing. 🌱 Today's Rest Invitation Leave a little space in your day completely unclaimed. You don't have to fill it. You don't have to explain it. You don't have to make it meaningful. Just inhabit it. 🪷 Rest is not an absence of living. It is part of living.

This describes my yesterday. Thought about turning the computer on to listen to music, then didn't even do that. I felt blessed to keep my attention elsewhere.
Daily REST Reflection | October 8, 2026
When the Scattered Pieces Find Somewhere to Rest 🪵🍃 Sometimes rest doesn't come from sleeping, sitting still, or stepping away from our responsibilities. Sometimes rest comes from finally giving something we've carried a place to belong. A memory. An experience. An emotion. A story that has lived quietly within us for years. We may spend much of our lives carrying these experiences separately, revisiting them in fragments, sometimes becoming absorbed in the feelings they bring. But something can shift when we begin to observe rather than absorb. When we give an experience language. When we share what we've been carrying with someone willing to listen. When we allow ourselves to feel without demanding an immediate explanation or resolution. We create room. And sometimes, within that room, relief arrives. Not because the past has disappeared. Not because everything has been healed, understood, or completed. But because what was once carried silently no longer has to remain unexpressed. Rest can emerge through the gathering. Through connection. Through expression. Through giving our experiences somewhere to be held without requiring them to define our entire identity. And sometimes rest is recognizing that we don't have to carry every piece alone. 🌿 Today's invitation: Is there something you've been carrying that might benefit from a little room? Not necessarily to solve it. Perhaps simply to write it down, speak it aloud to someone you trust, or acknowledge that it's there. And remember, you don't have to revisit painful experiences before you're ready. Rest can also mean choosing not to engage today. Rest is not always the absence of movement. Sometimes it is the relief that follows being heard. Observe. Express. Rest. Reflect. 🪟🪵🍃

You make an interesting point here. It makes me think of the distinction they try to hammer into our brains in English class about the difference between "lay" and "lie." The former is usually defined as "place or put" and the latter "rest or recline," but we can indeed lay something to rest, putting it down in order to make space for rest for ourselves.

@Rose Barber Lol that's funny. Southern vernacular and dialect is pretty great. Where are you from?
🤗 Weekly Welcome
A warm welcome to our newest members this week - @Barbs Khan @Benjamin Lanin @Naomi Red cliffe 🌱✨ I’m so glad you’re here. Symbolic Literacy is a space for curiosity, observation, reflection, and learning how to notice the symbols, patterns, stories, and meaning moving through everyday life without rushing to force an interpretation. Take your time exploring the classroom, wander through whatever catches your attention, and feel free to introduce yourself when you’re ready. There’s no need to consume everything at once. This space is meant to be lived with, not raced through. 🐢📚 And to everyone already here, thank you for helping this little room keep growing into a thoughtful, curious community. Welcome in. 🤗🌿 - Rose
