Can I Coach You for a Minute?
If we were sitting together right now and you told me, "I don't know where to start." I probably wouldn't begin by talking about chapters. I'd ask you this: "What experience changed the way you see the world?" 🌍 Because books rarely begin with an outline. They begin with meaning. Start there. Everything else becomes much easier to build around. I'd love to know, what experience comes to mind for you? Share it in the comments! 🤩

It isn't the most profound experience, but it is what springs to mind... I went on a date with someone, I sort of knew through shared interests. And we started talking politics and she threw a glass of water in my face in a restaurant. 🫗 The truth is that I had never thought much about politics and social issues. I had picked up a few ideas from... somewhere...? Kim challenged me on those ideas. She called me privileged. I almost laughed at her. I left school at 16 to get a job, and left home shortly after that. My family was not very functional. Then she asked me whether I could read when I started school. I told, her of course Mum had taught all of us kids to read by the time we went to school at 5 years old, and helped us to improve when we got to school. Kim (who was a teacher), explained that this is what she meant by me being in a privileged position. Many of her students can't read because their parents couldn't read, or couldn't/wouldn't teach them. That one conversation totally flipped my mind on a lot of things. Kim and I decided we should remain friends and not take it any further.... 😉

@Dani Rosenblad James I think she just wanted to make a point, she is quite dramatic. 😂 It certainly got my attention! 😉
Sometimes you don't know what your story means until you finally put it into words.
For a long time, I thought some experiences in my life were simply things I had to carry quietly. When I started writing , I realized something unexpected: Writing wasn't only about creating "a book". It helped me understand parts of myself I hadn't fully understood before. It helped me solve the problem about stop letting other people´s expectations to define your life. Maybe that's one of the reasons stories matter so much. We don't always write because we already understand the meaning. Sometimes we write because we're trying to understand it. I'm friendly curious: Is there something from your own life that you haven't fully understood until you started putting it into words?

I know this isn't exactly what you asked, but it is what sprang to mind. in 2024 I coached Jesse Whitehead for his TEDx talk. He is a statistician that deals with Health and Geography... It is an interesting talk, and it went well. When I asked him a few weeks after the talk what was the biggest impact from the experience of doing the talk, his answer surprised me. He said: "My wife said she now understands what I do". Think about that for a second. I don't know how long they have been married, but they have a couple of kids, so I imagine they have been together a while. And in all that time he couldn't communicate what he actually did at work. But we put some serious time into that talk, simplifying the complex, making it accessible to non-scientists or non-statisticians. And of course his wife heard him practice it many times, and she told me that evening she was very proud watching him perform it on the TEDx stage. So yes, putting in the work to articulate what we do, or how we feel about something can be a huge unlock for us and for those around us. 😃

You're Not Behind!
I was thinking about something this morning... I've talked to writers who have been working on their book for six months. Others for six years. Some for twenty. Every single one of them felt like they were behind. 😬 But behind compared to who? 🤔 Writing a book isn't a race. It isn't about how quickly you finish. It's about continuing to come back to the page.📃 ✍️ One sentence ✍️ One paragraph ✍️ One chapter at a time If you've written anything recently, even if it's just a few sentences, You've written. 🎉 What's one small win you're celebrating today?

Sometimes you need the time and space, and new experiences to polish an idea from good to amazing. It is all part of the process. It doesn't look like work so we tend to discount it, but it is important!
