🎙️ The Hours: Ep. 129 " Coaching Cliches we need to leave behind in 2026"
Critics have described this episode as "Fascinating" The guys broke down the coaching cliches you've heard a thousand times — and asked if they actually help players. Some Examples of Coachisms - "Defense wins championships" data says it's actually offense. Debunked. - "Give 110%" that's impossible. We like Dick DeVenzio's number better: give 87%. Leaves room to grow instead of hitting a ceiling. - "Get a stop" / "hands up" — too vague, and hands-up isn't even good positioning off the ball. Swap for specific, sticky cues: touch leather, hunt the pass, get in a stance. From my own experience, one of my pro coaches would get so frustrated with us and his english wasn't very good so he would just yell, "DO BETTER." 🎧 Full episode linked below. 👇 What's a coaching phrase you say all the time that might need a rethink?

The Single Essential Shooting Tune-Up: ROCKERS
Hey coaches — If I could pick one shooting tune-up for every player to do daily — without actually diagnosing their shot — it would be ROCKERS. It's the best way for a player to develop their handprint + footprint and to build the sequence of their shot. Sequence equals power. Why ROCKERS instead of one-handed form shooting But most shooting problems in your gym aren't a hand problem — they're a sequence problem. Feet, hips, chest, hand — in the wrong order at the wrong speed. Fix the sequence, and you fix the power. Fix the power, and you fix the arc, the range, and the consistency — all at once. ROCKERS drills the whole sequence. What ROCKERS builds - Handprint — where the ball sits, how it releases, the finish - Footprint — feet-to-shot connection, base, alignment - Sequence — the order and timing that produces effortless power Watch it, install it, and use it as your pre-practice standard. The coaching leverage (the part I want you to hold onto) If you can understand how to teach this, you can help the majority of your players fix the majority of their problems. That's rare. Most tune-ups are player-specific and require diagnosis. ROCKERS doesn't. Every player benefits from it — and it improves the highest-leverage part of the shot without you having to individually break down 12 different shooters. How to use it - Drop it into pre-practice — replace one-handed form shooting for every player past the beginner stage - Every player, every day. 5-10 minutes is enough. - Reps compound. Two weeks in, you'll see it in games. The bottom line You don't need to diagnose every player's shot to make them shoot better tomorrow. Teach them ROCKERS. Run it daily. Get out of their way. Sequence equals power. 🎯 Want your players to go all-in on their shot? 🎬 Sneak Peek: Film Don't Lie - Our New Exclusive Segment
We pride ourselves in not just teaching the what & why, but also the HOW. Watching film is no different - most coaches tell their players to watch film, but nobody actually teaches them how. That's where SAVI comes in! We've launched a brand new segment inside our player community called FILM DON'T LIE - and we wanted to give you a sample of what's coming. Here are a few gems that came out of the conversation: FOR PLAYERS: - Watch yourself start to finish. Don't skip around. Sit down, watch the full game, and absorb. - Go in looking for 1-2 things you can do better, not everything at once. - Give yourself grace. Use it as a tool, not a punishment. FOR COACHES: - Watch with a checklist. Know what you're looking for before you press play. Define it in advance. - Frame the clip before you show it. Don't talk over the film - say what to look for first, then let it run. - Show the same clip three times: once cold, once with direction, then with the new frame locked in. - End with a behavior change. Ask: "What are you going to do differently?" One more thing that works incredibly well: when you spot something a player needs to fix, show them a clip of a player like them doing it right (not an NBA highlight). Then go back to their clip. The comparison lands every time. This is just a taste of what we're building inside Basketball Training by SAVI. Every session goes deep on one concept - using real clips, real players, and a real system for developing your eye for the game. Check it out for yourself with the 7-day free trial

Encouragement to join as a premium member
When I decided to move to a conceptual offense this season, my research led me to SAVI, and their philosophies immediately resonated with me. I started as a monthly member but quickly bit the bullet and upgraded to an annual membership—and it has completely transformed my program. Last year, my practices lacked structure, and I rarely used small sided games nor used constraints in any of our games/drills. This year, by implementing SAVI's 4-quarter practice plan and the layered teaching concepts of the RDS system, our practices are structured in a far better way, and our players are getting significantly more quality reps tailored to their strengths. The proof is in the results: we finished last season with a record of 12-20, but halfway through our current season, we are already 12-7 and competing at a much higher level. The free community is a great starting point, but unlocking the premium membership is where the real transformation happens. Beyond the deep-dive X’s and O’s, the premium community of coaches is a phenomenal wealth of knowledge, and @Mark Cascio, @Tyler Coston and @Clare Murphy are absolute diamonds who are always accessible and willing to help. If you are sitting on the fence about upgrading, stop hesitating. Look at it as a direct investment in your coaching growth and your team’s success rather than an expense. The structure, elite resources, and immediate impact on winning habits make the premium membership worth every single penny.
