The importance of the Zettelkasten, even when not directly relevant
We've released today's lesson - https://www.skool.com/parazettel-community-4498/classroom/38433b8f?md=2c8cf9ba33a54d5c9a06d118063f842e It's all about idea development and management, using a Zettelkasten. Inside, you can watch as I explain why it's good to start building one ASAP, even if it's not directly to do with your project at hand, as well as how a note inside a Zettelkasten should be set out and link to others. I should remind you again that these ideas that are genuinely from your brain and in your words are your moat against blending in with all the other slop-ified output on the rest of the internet and in the real word. Start externalising them and linking them into your projects as soon as is possible. You can begin today with the instructions in the session of making two related notes in a new Zettelkasten. I'll attach some recent notes of mine as inspiration!

The idea of Zettelkasten notes both piques my interest, and overwhelms me. I am trying to wrap my head around the practice.
Minimal Note-Taking ≠ Aesthetics (DAY 4)
Today's lesson - https://www.skool.com/parazettel-community-4498/classroom/38433b8f?md=7598836bd1eb416ca35356309396d9d7 It's about something I'd classify as the most 'Foundational' out of anything I teach when it comes to PKM... Minimal Note-Taking - the idea that you should only add features to your system when they provide overwhelming benefit (based on Cal Newport's idea of Digital Minimalism). You're almost always trading off complexity for a feature when you add it, so you need to build carefully. I didn't go into too much theoretical detail during the lesson, seeing as there's a bonus course on the topic, and that the entire program is pretty much a crash-course in Minimal Note-Taking in practice. We'll be applying what we've learned from the last two lessons in Obsidian for real in the next one, See you then!

Finding the balance between "must have" and "nice to have" plugins is a challenge. The tendency towards "ooh, shiny!" reaction to new things is a stumbling block for me to keep in mind.
Setting Up Vanilla Obsidian
Originally I was quite unsure about how I'd be able to teach in this program. Was it going to be purely theory, with videos + text? How would I get people to follow along? After some thought, I'm choosing to demonstrate building out a minimum viable system as we go through the lessons, showing you how simple personal note-taking really can be. Today's lesson is the first of these interventions, with me taking stock (or 'vanilla') Obsidian and simplifying it, installing a handful of plugins and deactivating and hiding many others. You can watch it over at - https://www.skool.com/parazettel-community-4498/classroom/38433b8f?md=f738b097c3ad4a4ab7329192e4e65ad4 Keep in mind we're going to be bringing a few more moving pieces into the vault as we progress, this is simply to put together a clean slate if you're new to the app, and to give you inspiration for how simple things can be if you've already got a vault. I'll see you back here tomorrow to combine our two lessons - the goals we've set for ourselves, and the new, simple vault we've created!

I am intrigued by the Hider plugin, given that the various UI controls can be overwhelming at times. Have not incorporated the Hider plugin into my Obsidian practice, yet, but am considering doing so.
Foundations Day 1 (Begin Program Here)
⬇️ Scroll past program intro to find the first lesson ⬇️ The PARAZETTEL Foundations program works by giving you a small lesson each day over about the span of two weeks. You unlock the lessons gradually, and then once you're at the end, you unlock everything else in the community (if you haven't already). The process... I. The Minimum Viable System II. The Idea --> Output Pipeline III. Expanding + Compounding We go through all of these through daily video lessons and resources, and you'll go from zero to working and personalised system during that time. I'll be coming with you, using vanilla Obsidian at the start, so that you can see how I'd set things up (and so I don't have to deal with the overhead of building a custom template again 😅). You'll have emails (if you're on the list) to guide you through the process and ensure that you're not having to log into Skool and keep an eye on the classroom to stay up to date, and there'll be posts like this one that you can go through as well if you'd like. --- https://www.skool.com/parazettel-community-4498/classroom/38433b8f?md=9ad3dee232664272b69c11b345a5b586 As for today's lesson ^^ , as we said in the video and in the classroom, as a comment on this post, comment one or two things that you're working on right now that would genuinely benefit from a more dialled in PKM system -- one that works for you rather than competes for your attention. Your job is to decide before tomorrow which one of these goals it is that we're going to be working on together throughout the rest of the course, so that we can start with a clean slate and crystal sharp focus tomorrow. I await your comments, and see you soon for day 2! -- Theo

I'm Derek, a retired IT worker (C# programmer, SQL enthusiast, web site developer). My goal with Foundations is enable me to capture and easily recall information, and to learn how to incorporate AI assistance in the process. I have used Obsidian for 5+ years, although I am not sure of the exact span. I use Obsidian daily, most often from the mobile app, journaling and capturing interesting articles from the web and social media.
What app would you use if Obsidian disappeared tomorrow?
We're going to start having more discussions in here in the Community, so here's my first question... What app would you use if Obsidian disappeared tomorrow? I'll put a poll at the bottom, and let's hear your thoughts! For me, it would probably be Reflect or Capacities. As much as I want to say Apple Notes, for the sake of keeping things simple, I've grown beyond that point of knowledge management where I just need folders and tags. I'd want something more powerful.
