Heads up, tax preparers! It’s time to renew your PTIN for 2026 If you prepare or assist with preparing federal tax returns for pay, you need a valid Preparer Tax Identification Number (PTIN). The IRS has already started accepting PTIN renewals for the 2026 cycle. Here’s what you need to know to stay compliant: ✅ How to renew your PTIN 1. Log into your PTIN account If you already have an online PTIN account, go ahead and sign in. 2. Complete the renewal application You’ll need to verify or update your personal information and answer a few questions. 3. Pay the renewal fee The cost is $18.75, payable by credit/debit/ATM card or eCheck. Once your application and payment are accepted, you’ll receive confirmation. 📄 Paper option (if you prefer) You can also renew by paper using Form W-12. The IRS says the paper process may take about 6 weeks.
