Salut! Today you're learning how to form the passé composé with avoir — the most common way to talk about the past in French! Video below J'ai mangé — I ate Tu as parlé — You spoke Il / Elle / On a fini — He / She / We finished Nous avons travaillé — We worked Vous avez regardé — You watched (formal / plural) Ils / Elles ont joué — They played The formula is simple: avoir (conjugated) + past participle. You already know all the avoir forms — now you just need to learn the past participle of each verb. -er verbs → swap -er for -é (parler → parlé) -ir verbs → swap -ir for -i (finir → fini) -re verbs → swap -re for -u (vendre → vendu) Can you make a few sentences using today's words? Video below Le passé composé — for completed actions and specific events J'ai mangé à 8 heures Elle est arrivée hier soir Nous avons pris le bus Il a cassé son téléphone Ils sont entrés dans le bâtiment L'imparfait — for habits and ongoing situations Je mangeais souvent ici Il faisait froid Elle était fatiguée Nous attendions le bus Ils habitaient à Montréal The key rule to remember: imparfait = vague, ongoing, repetitive. Passé composé = precise, finished, one specific moment. If you can replace it with "used to" or "was doing" in English, it's imparfait. If it happened once and it's done, it's passé composé!
