🐦‍⬛ Visible Friday #24: The Angry Video I Didn’t Post This Week
This is the video I’m not posting this week. I’m sharing it here with you Vizzy D’s instead. Because sometimes visibility work is also about: knowing thyself. I’ve had a barrage lately of angry DMs from funeral directors, full of accusations, assumptions and some fairly wild interpretations of what I’m doing. And honestly? It triggered me. And swung my Taurean passive-aggression into full swing… 🐂😂 Some of my anger was warranted. But after making this video, I realised I was about to do something I often encourage you guys NOT to do: Create content for the people who are annoying you. 😅 So I slept on it. I shared my frustration with some trusted peers & friends. And they helped me realign where I wanted to put my energy. Because the people I’m really here to speak to aren’t the people I’m arguing with in my head. They’re the families who need to know what kind of person I am. They’re the peers who are looking for a different way of doing things. They’re the people who might see one of my posts and think: “Oh. I think I’d like to work with her.” 🐦‍⬛ We talk about this a lot in the Social Reels Masterclass, but your social media is your shopfront window. And families, colleagues and potential collaborators are looking through that window all the time. So this week, I want you to notice: Who are you actually speaking to? And perhaps more importantly: Who have you accidentally started creating content for? The person who criticised you? The competitor who gets under your skin? The colleague who disagrees with you? The imaginary person you’re trying to prove something to? Or the people you actually want to reach? 🐦‍⬛ YOUR VISIBLE FRIDAY PROMPT Think of something you’ve posted recently, or wanted to post, and ask: Who was I really speaking to? Then ask: If the person I most want to work with walked into my shopfront window right now, would this content tell them something useful about me? And finally: What would I create if I stopped trying to prove something and started trying to connect?

Hugs Amy!! You're amazing - keep doing what you're doing!!
Ethics on socials
I'm so glad that you talked about ethics. I've strong views on this! I don't feel that vulnerable people are in a position to give consent for use of their images or stories on social media. I don't think they should be put on the spot by asking consent. They might like us and not want to say no. They might just be so tired and beat that they don't have it in them to say no. I think a few FDs are asking for consent but I don't think they should be doing that. They should just not use the content. I sometimes witness some amazing things in my work and there are photos. Same for all of us. But when I have a desire to share it I think 'who is it serving?' and if the answer is me,.well there you go, don't share it. What we do is we take photos for families and give them the photos and tell them that they're for them and we won't be using them. If they're not a distressed family and I see them sharing them on socials or in a Google review I'll wait a while and then ask. Or sometimes I'll ask after a year or two. You are a very good example of a fantastic social media presence without needing to share photos of families and funerals.

Thanks for this discussion Rosie and apologies for being so late responding. I'm not a big social media poster but am in awe of how amazing @Amy Firth is and I think it's something I should get better at. I am yet to do the masterclass but keen to when I find the head space. Most of my death related social media posts are around advocating for human composting as a body disposal option in Australia and encouraging consideration of environmentally conscious choices when planning a funeral. I have joined the funeral industry so that I can advocate for change from inside the tent rather than throwing stones from the outside. The purpose of any social media posts I do make showing examples of funerals I've conducted are to give people ideas of how they might plan their own funeral or one for a family member, as they might not know that so many different options are available. Most of the funerals I arrange are for people in my community who I know, and I only use examples of funerals from people who are big social media users themselves, or friends who are supportive of me raising awareness of the work I do. I don't mind if people choose someone else, but I know I should do better when I hear "if only I knew you could have helped me I would have come to you..."
Question re: body disposal advocacy
I've been doing a series of videos for my community to outline the various body disposal options that are and aren't available in Australia. I'm quite taken with the recompose movement in the US (https://recompose.life/), and also open pyres. I'm wondering if there are any advocacy movements for either of these things (but I feel the recompose would be more successful than pyres at this point!). If so, can you point me that way, because I'd love to join. If there's none, can anyone explain why this is the case?

@Jen Blyth I'm excited to share an update that Alex Greenwich MP will be presenting a bill to NSW parliament on Thursday 25th June advocating for human composting to be available in NSW. There was a feature article on this in yesterday's Sun Herald, but you may only be able to access the article if you subscribe to the SMH. It has since been covered through other media channels. @Jen Blyth you may also want to join the Natural Death Advocacy Network (NDAN) to help us gain support for different death care options in Australia. And if you want human composting to become available please contact your local MP and let them know!
