I recently went on Idealista to advertise our apartment for rent. After posting my listing, a few minutes later, I received a message, within Idealista’s message system, from Support that my account needed verification, or the listing would be deleted in 3 days. Sounds legit, a bit harsh but, ok. Now, let me give some backstory. I have been a software engineer for 25 years. I have worked in IT. I have built websites, web applications and maintained computer security. I have been working with computers before most people ever heard of the internet much less email. I have and do work with data. Lots of data, building and troubleshooting web applications, you name it. I’m on the computer more than I am not. When the support message from Idealista came through, it was in Portuguese and I wanted to make sure I didn’t mistranslate anything so I copied and pasted the message in DeepL. DeepL didn’t translate it. Ok, that happens sometimes. So then, I used the DeepL screen capture tool and that worked. “You’re listing will be deleted in 3 days if your account is not verified, click here to verify." Ok, I’m getting tired but I don’t want my last hour of work to get lost. I click on ‘here’. “Enter your billing account number and account balance.” Stop shaking your head! Ok, that’s a new one, maybe this is a European thing. I’ve been getting wierd ways to verify identity. I enter my debit card number and balance. It sits there and spins. I look at the URL and immediately realize I’ve been had! What a f’n dumba**!!! Turns out, it would not paste into DeepL because the fake support message was written using characters that are human readable but Idealista filters and DeepL could not recognize. I didn’t hover over the link like I usually do or right click and check the URL. They wore me down and I got sloppy. I immediately called Activobank and cancelled the card. Thank goodness I did not enter my IBAN. I soon started getting notifications that people wanted to see my apartment.
