CV & Cover letter discussion
Hi all, A new member @Esmael Yimer asked for some discussion, tips, etc. on resumes / CVs, cover letters, etc. I’ll start the conversation w/ my experience. Please don’t be shy and jump in with your own thoughts, experiences, tips, questions, answers, etc. 1. I probably have a dozen or so of these CVs and cover letters that I keep around for reference. 2. I create custom CVs and cover letters for each role that I apply for 3. In applying for roles, particularly if it’s an urgent need, there’s been a layoff, etc. the urge I have is to blast out ~100 applications. 4. This rarely works and the best roles I’ve gotten have either come through connections in my network or roles that are a very good and a very specific match for what I’m good at + have deep experience with + work I really enjoy 5. Focus on those three things and actually narrow your scope 6. When applying, start connecting with folks in the org you’re applying for and, if you can figure it out, specifically with the group and leader you think you may be working with Feel free to add your own tips, questions and answers here. Now, on to the CV discussion. I’m not sure I can drop docs right here in chat. I may need to create sanitized and public links instead. I’ll try that now. What we can do 1:1 or as a group is go through these CVs / cover letters and discuss what we have found works best.

Your “soft skills” section is an excellent addition as well.

Anybody else want to share their CV, thoughts, ideas, etc.?
What are you building right now?
Hi everyone, I’m Steffania from Colombia 👋 I speak with a lot of technology leaders, and I’ve noticed that the most interesting conversations rarely start with “What problem are you trying to solve?” They usually start with genuine curiosity about what someone is building, what they’re learning, or how their perspective has changed along the way. So, instead of a long introduction, I’d love to hear from you: What are you building or working on right now, and what’s been the most interesting part of it so far?

Are we connected on LinkedIn, what part of the world are you in? I enjoy working in LatAm and lived / worked down there in the Navy too. To your point about business, sales, etc. I enjoy how much / most of LatAm and EMEA tend to favor personal connection over business, or at least prefer to do business with people that is based in a human connection/ relationship to at least some degree.

Welcome to Novus and thank you for joining, I’m glad you’re here and I’m looking forward to working with you as well. My apologies for the slow replies; work and life has been busy this week. Our membership is growing, but engagement and value remains low. I’m looking for ways to help members engage and learn. I’m open to suggestions. Should we: 1. Have different courses and content? 2. Do a weekly open discussion video call? 3. Share our LinkedIn profiles so we can network and collaborate publicly? 4. Provide different courses and content? This is our community and we can build and grow it however it serves our members best.
Good Day Everyone.
Happy to join in this group. https://www.linkedin.com/in/gmfaruk/

Hi Faruk, or do you prefer GM? Welcome. Wow, 136K followers. You’ve clearly been doing this a long time and have learned a lot. Would you be interested in doing a course here on LinkedIn network building?
