My husband died by suicide 8 years go. I was 60. When I called to get survivor benefits, TWICE they told me that I needed to wait until full retirement age. Thus, I lost several years of benefits because what they told me was wrong. Now I'm deep in debt and am 68. Switching to my own much higher benefits in the hopes of paying things off so I can eventually retire. However, now that I've somewhat gotten over the trauma of his suicide, I also want to find and should be able to get a higher paying job. Most jobs don't give you medical insurance for three months. Right now I only have part A. I don't want to have to get part B and pay like $600 a month because I'm making more money which would cancel out the whole benefit of a new job and higher salary. Right now I also have more vacation time but hate my job. Can I pay COBRA for three months without having to take part B and then I'd be covered again because I'm insured by my employer or am I stuck at this job I hate until I turn 72 so I don't have to get part B. I don't want to be penalized because there's a gap. Very confused about this. Thanks for this site, Dr. Weir!
