I was already into wine by the time I tried this wine, but this experience is something that has never left my memory. It was one of my first weeks, running the program at Nove Italiano in Las Vegas. I was at the hostess stand, looking over the reservations for the day, and a gentleman walked in and asked to speak to the sommelier. Granted at the time I was 22 years old, so probably looked like the hostess. I told him I was a sommelier and I would be happy to help him in without even looking at a wine list he asked do you have Massetto? I knew I had the 2000 vintage and I knew it was one of the most expensive bottles on my list and said yes I do. Would you care to see the wine list? He said no “thank you, I’m going to sit at the bar. I’ll need three glasses, please”. I opened the wine, poured the taste for him and he said “amazing. Thank you so much. You can leave one glass empty, fill my glass up halfway, and then please fill this second glass up.” I did as he said and then asked him if I could get him anything else and he said “no thank you” and pointed at the full glass and said “that’s for you. I appreciate you.” A full glass of $2,000 wine he was handing to me like it was water, and I looked at him and said “I don’t know if I can have that.” He chuckled and said “I want you to take this glass and put it in the wine cellar, every single time you go in, take a small sip and see how this wine evolves.” I did as he said, and was beyond mind blown by the end of the night. I will never forget that wine or that generous man!
