Because what he says is absolutely catastrophic when you connect it to what he did afterward with his fortune. Masterclass on a mindset and its real impact. In the interview, he's accused of contributing to financial collapses in Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan, and Russia. Response: "All of the above." Then he owns it outright: "I am basically there to make money. I cannot and do not look at the social consequences of what I do. As a competitor, I've got to compete to win." Translation: "I am fundamentally there to make money. I cannot and do not look at the social consequences of what I do. As a competitor, I have to win." The interviewer asks which of the two Soroses he is: the amoral one or the moral one. Response: "It's one person who at one time engages in amoral activities and the rest of the time tries to be moral." One single person who does amoral things at certain moments and tries to be moral the rest of the time. On his childhood during the Holocaust (he was 14 in Budapest in 1944, a Jewish survivor passing as Christian): he accompanied an official who was housing him and witnessed operations to confiscate Jewish property. He says he felt "no feeling of guilt" (no sense of guilt). He compares it to markets: if it wasn't him, someone else would have done it anyway. He saw himself as a spectator. It's chilling to hear, even taking into account the context of a child in the middle of a Nazi occupation surviving as best he could. But the real thread running through it all is this embraced philosophy: I don't look at the social consequences when I'm making money. Because that same man then gave more than $32 billion through his Open Society Foundations to actively shape society. He massively funds NGOs, left-wing progressive movements, judicial reforms, causes around immigration and multiculturalism. In 2015-2016, he publicly wrote that Europe should set a target of 300,000 to 500,000 refugees per year, with tens of billions of euros in shared funding, treating national borders as "the obstacle."
