Long Rests
I have a party that thinks, when they run low on spell slots and hit points, they can just take a long rest anywhere -- the middle of a corridor, bridge, hallway -- you know, high-traffic areas -- and they are back to 100%. I constantly give them random encounters, which do tend to happen in hallways, but they just keep trying until everyone gets bored and I just say, "the night passes with out incident". I need to find someway to give them consequences, but also give them some mechanism to where they can take a long rest that makes sense. I'm open to any ideas. Thank you.

This is something to discuss as a table, but I just set the framing that "you need to be back home or in a safe and secure place in order to long rest." There are other ways to approach it but that's the simplest. Daggerheart solves this well by making it so that on a long or short rest you still can't do everything; you're choosing from a menu. I think you could potentially borrow that: you can heal up *or* restore spell slots *or* regain feat uses.
Sean Foer's laws of GMing
First: Play the game in front of you, with the people at your table. Second: Respect your players' agency. Third: Be generous with information Fourth: Prep situations, not plots Fifth: Invite randomness, intentionally. Sixth: Make choices meaningful. Seventh: Love your players Always gold advice.

@Tristan Fishel I think a lot of folks come in with a scarcity mindset: "I only have a few good ideas, I need to measure them out carefully." But ideas grow from ideas, and nothing enlivens the imagination more than seeing an idea meet the crucible of players adding their own imaginations to the mix.
An example of character creation questions from the Seven Part Pact
An amazing, audacious game from Jay Dragon; currently crowdfunding here: https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/sjgames/seven-part-pact Plus One Exp has been doing deep-dives on each of the wizards here: https://www.youtube.com/@PlusOneExp The Necromancer Your humble magic, performed at your will and whim without any incantation, allow you to: - Conjure shadows along the walls, to fill the homes and hearts of men with wicked dread, and move within such darkness. - Silence the breeze, still all sound, dampen the calls of nature and in turn ensure your own footsteps are silent as you pass. - While holding close to your pact-fragment, wander between the veil of worlds and place one foot within the realms of death, taking but a single living soul with you at a time (if they dare). You possess a set of ancient treasures, which you may call upon in times of need: - A cloak woven from shadows and dying breaths, which upon donning may disguise you as moonlight and mist. - A set of ancient chimes, which only ring when the dead are near, and whose tune is loud and harsh to the souls of the dead. - A deck of oracle cards, depicting many possible and strangely specific tragic fates, which tends to be more accurate than not. - A gravedigger's shovel. You also possess… - This book of magic, filled with the notes of Necromancers past. - Black clothes, or gravedigger's clothes, or funeral garb. - Any materials needed for your wizardry, such as (but not limited to) chalk, loose bones, grave dirt, needle & thread, etc. - Any accessibility tools or mobility aids, such as (but not limited to) glasses, canes, wheelchairs, sleeping herbs, etc. For each question, make your choice on behalf of your Wizard, and mark down the resulting values of your Elemental Circles: - For all your life, you have watched death cavort around you. Do you sympathize with those who mourn (+1 Fire) or reject utterly such weaknesses (+1 Air)?  - The underbelly of Isha is crawling with petty ghoul-callers who fashion themselves your peers. Do you regard them as uncertain allies at the border of death (+1 Fire) or enemies to the Pact and all you stand for (+1 Earth)? - All your time spent around the dead has left an impact on your personality. Are you macabre and irreverent (+1 Air) or pragmatic and blunt (+1 Earth)? - The poorest and most frail islands of Isha have recently lost many to plague and warfare. Do those citizens greet you like an old friend (+1 Water) or spurn your presence and arrival (+1 Earth)? - Imagine a child begs you for help, having just lost her mother in a most unfair manner. Do you try and help despite the cost (+1 Water) or teach the child the cruelty of the world (+1 Air)? - You are familiar with death's wicked toll. Did you lose a lover (+1 Fire) or a family (+1 Water)?

NotebookLM
I know people vary in their acceptance of AI, and I have my own concerns, but I've been using NotebookLM lately and really enjoying it. You include sources into a notebook and it adds the content into a model. I add episode recordings into a notebook and it provides stunningly good summaries, and also answers questions about the content very well. It isn't perfect, and occasionally you have to correct it (especially names), but it has proven to be very useful for helping me to remember things that happened 100+ episodes ago.

I'm working on a home solution that replaces my need for NotebookLM, but it is a GODSEND for sourcebook heavy-games (VtM and Ars Magica in particular). Just to ask "where is the rule for X and what is it?" is amazing.
