I’ve had a bit of a nightmare over the last few days and wanted to see if anyone else has seen this particular type of counterfeit. I bought a number of vintage WotC cards recently, including 1st Edition Base Set/Fossil and some 1st Edition Neo Destiny cards. At first glance they were actually pretty convincing, but once I started comparing them closely against known-genuine cards and looking under a microscope, quite a few things started to look wrong. The main things I noticed were: - a visible red/magenta halftone pattern through the yellow borders - what looks like the wrong magenta screen angle under magnification - backs that are more green/teal than the normal deep blue - much brighter yellow Pokémon lettering on the back - some of the HP/text printing looking thinner or weaker - cardstock/finish feeling too smooth compared with genuine old WotC cards The Neo Destiny cards in particular had me doubting myself because they look and feel much more convincing at first, but they still seem to share several of the same printing characteristics. I’ve now had refunds accepted, so I’m not out of pocket, but I’m really curious whether anyone here has come across this newer generation of vintage fakes before. Are these becoming common now? And has anyone seen the same 45-degree magenta halftone pattern being used to identify them? I’ll add some microscope and side-by-side photos below because I think they’re quite interesting — some of these are much better fakes than the obvious ones I’d seen previously. Would be interested to hear from anyone who regularly authenticates WotC cards or has seen similar examples.
