Loving reflecting on how far I’ve evolved since last summer
Last summer, I came into this space trying to figure out how to cultivate a creative outlet and community outside of my identity as an occupational therapist, researcher, and critical co-constructive implementation scientist. Looking back, I think I was trying to separate parts of myself that were never really separate. I originally found occupational therapy because of its roots in the arts and crafts movement and its focus on meaning, creativity, participation, and helping people navigate barriers to doing the things that make life worth living. My research eventually led me into questions about how knowledge moves into practice, who gets access to it, whose knowledge counts, and who gets to participate in creating it. Last summer, I explored another side of that through Rewilding the Mythic Self, an experimental Skool community focused on creativity, spirituality, identity, and daily life. I also got to participate in Brenda’s Aligned AF Summer Camp Summit, where I shared some of my occupational science work around deinstitutionalizing daily life and making life feel a little more like summer camp all year long. A year later, Rewilding is on pause and I’m much more interested in integration than separation. I’m now exploring community building around some of the more unknown, misunderstood, and polarizing edges of my field. I’m especially interested in developing a summit as another branch of my field research, experimenting with what it could look like to literally deinstitutionalize how research and knowledge are shared and co-created by moving more of that work outside academic silos and into community. That’s one of the things I love about Brenda’s model: starting with free access to useful knowledge and then creating pathways for deeper, equitable engagement that can also sustainably resource the work. I’m curious about how models like this might help deconstruct scientific elitism while still honoring rigor, expertise, ethics, and labor. And on a very human level, I’m also here to improve my online social skills. 😂 I want to get better at cultivating actual relationships around complex and sometimes contentious ideas rather than simply broadcasting information, while figuring out how to make this work sustainable alongside full-time clinical practice.

@Simona Rinfreschi powerful work I certainly feel conventional supports have not been truly accessible to likely most families in need
Anyone else in the therapy/medical/academic field?
Curious who else here comes from therapy, healthcare, academia, or another formally credentialed field and is navigating what it means to build publicly online? As an occupational therapist and researcher, I’m finding there’s an interesting gray area between being a credentialed professional and also being a whole human experimenting with community building, education, creativity, podcasting, and entrepreneurship. I care deeply about ethics and professional responsibility, while also not wanting my credential to mean that everything I explore publicly has to become clinical practice or professional advice. I’d love to connect with others navigating similar questions. How are you balancing professional identity, boundaries, creativity, and the freedom to experiment online?
Well Done!

Hi everyone! I’m Josie Jarvis. I’m an occupational therapist, occupational science-informed implementation scientist, educator, writer, and community builder in Washington State. I really enjoyed being part of Brenda’s Aligned AF Summer Camp and summit, so I’m excited to be joining Scale Camp! If you click through my profile, you’ll find my Skool community Rewilding the Mythic Self, a creative coaching project exploring art, mythology, meaning, and transformation. That project is currently on hiatus while I focus on integrating my creative work with my academic and professional work through the Evolved Living OT/OS Collaborative. For a while, I tried to build something completely separate from occupational therapy. Eventually I realized it’s basically impossible for me to separate myself from being an OT, and maybe I don’t need to. Rather than running away from that part of myself, I’m learning how to integrate it with everything else I create. Evolved Living is becoming the larger ecosystem for that integration, bringing together occupational science, knowledge translation, education, research, creativity, community, and professional development. I’ve gotten pretty good at generating ideas, resources, collaborations, and projects. Now I want to get better at building the sustainable infrastructure around them. I’m especially interested in memberships, community building, summits and events, clearer offers, and creating systems that don’t require me to personally carry everything. Excited to learn, experiment, connect, and see what everyone else is building! 🌱
