Have you ever found readers in a place you never expected?
I feel like we spend so much time trying to figure out where our readers should be that we sometimes overlook where they’re actually finding us. Maybe it was a random conversation, a recommendation from another reader, a post you almost didn’t share, a newsletter, a book club, a podcast, a local event, or something completely unexpected. Where have your readers actually been coming from lately, and what have you been doing that seems to be helping? Even if it only brought you a handful of new readers, I’d still love to hear about it. Sometimes the small discoveries are the ones that give another author their next idea.
Hey everyone, I’m new here and thought I’d say hello.
I’m working on becoming a better and more consistent writer, and one of the reasons I joined this community was to connect with other authors who are figuring things out too. I’m interested in sharing ideas, talking about what’s actually working, being honest about the parts that are difficult, and learning from each other along the way. I just enjoy conversations about writing and the process behind it. What’s something you’ve been struggling with in your writing lately?

@Lauriann Greene You have a lot on your plate! Honestly, I’d really encourage you to leverage help where you can, especially with the parts that can get time-consuming like setup, visibility, and marketing. It can make the whole process feel a lot less overwhelming when you have someone who can guide you through what to prioritize and take things step by step. You’ve already done the hard part by finishing the book, so you don’t have to feel like you have to figure out every other piece alone.

@Suzi Elton Exactly! That’s what makes it so overwhelming, you can spend money on so many things without really knowing what’s actually going to move the needle for your book. I’d recommend reaching out to Emily at [email protected]. She’s the person I mentioned and can give you some practical tips and help you figure out what to focus on step by step. I’ll also message you in chat so we can continue our conversation there. 😊
What’s one reader-growth strategy you wish you had tried sooner?
I have been thinking about how much time we can spend trying different things to get our books in front of the right readers. Sometimes something works, sometimes it doesn’t, and sometimes we discover something that makes us wonder why we didn’t try it sooner. 😅 For those of you who have been working on growing your readership, what’s one thing you started doing that actually made a difference? It could be something simple like building your email list, being more consistent on social media, connecting with other authors, getting involved in reader communities, running ads, doing promotions, or something completely different. I’d especially love to hear from authors who tried something and thought, “I really wish I had started doing this earlier.” What’s yours?
Amazon Providing Bulk Discounts - How's That Work
First, continued thanks to Julie and Booklaunchers! Your investment of time and talents in our efforts are paying off. We are especially getting lots of attention for the book cover you created! Thanks! We just had a client purchase 73 copies of our book, The Neurodiversity Connection, for their organization. They said they got a bulk discount from Amazon. I'm wanting to learn how that works. I understand our royalties remain the same. What criteria does Amazon use and can I promote this concept with other clients.

@Joy Young Congrats on the 73-copy order! That’s a great result, especially for an organization purchase. From what I understand, Amazon can offer quantity discounts on eligible books when someone is purchasing multiple copies, particularly for business or organizational orders. The discount can vary depending on the quantity and how the order is placed, so I’d be careful about promising clients a specific discount upfront.
Do you ever feel like you have the time to write… until you actually have the time? 😅
I have noticed that sometimes the hardest part of writing isn’t coming up with ideas or even knowing what needs to be done. It’s sitting down and getting into the writing mindset, especially when life, work, and everything else gets in the way. Do you have a routine that helps you get into writing mode, or do you just write whenever you can find the time? What’s the one thing that helps you stay consistent with your writing?

@Rob Cole I really like that approach. Sometimes the actual writing happens long before we sit down at the computer, just in those random thoughts that pop up during the day. I’ve had ideas come to me when I’m doing something completely unrelated to writing, and if I don’t write them down, they’re gone five minutes later. 😂 I can imagine having all those notes waiting for you makes it much easier to let the floodgates open when you finally sit down. Do you usually find that those random ideas end up changing the direction of your book, or do they mostly fill in what you already planned?

@Joe Tyndall That’s a really smart way to look at it. I like the idea of having a few things in the pipeline so you can still make progress even when you’re not in the mood for the task at the top of the list. I’ve definitely found that forcing myself to write when I’m not feeling it can sometimes make the whole process feel like a chore. And you’re right, there’s so much more to being an author than just writing the book. Do you usually plan those other tasks out ahead of time, or do you decide what to work on based on what you feel like doing that day?
