Hi Everyone 👋 Somewhere along the way, most of us learned that rest is something you earn. You do the work, you meet the obligations, you tick the boxes, and then, if there's time, you rest. Rest as dessert. Rest as a bonus. This is completely backwards, and it's one of the main reasons we burn out. Rest isn't a reward for finishing. It's a condition for starting. The nervous system doesn't need to be earned into calm; it needs to be shown, regularly and gently, that it's safe to stand down. That's not indulgence. That's maintenance. In the Buddhist tradition, rest is not laziness. It's one of the supports for practice. The Buddha himself rested. He slept. He sat in the shade. He recovered from illness. He didn't power through. The Tao Te Ching talks about the importance of yielding, of softness, of not forcing. The soft overcomes the hard. The gentle overcomes the rigid. You cannot be soft when you're running on empty. Rest is what makes softness possible. So if you're in a season where rest feels impossible, here's the question I'd sit with. Not "how do I get through everything and then rest?" but "what is the smallest amount of rest I could take right now, without earning it first?" Five minutes? Ten? A cup of tea in silence? Lying on the floor for no reason? Closing the door for a moment and doing absolutely nothing? That's not a reward. That's medicine. Take it. With Love ❤️ Always Mark
