Stop Lighting Everything From the Front
One of the fastest ways to make food and cocktail photography look flat is putting your light right next to your camera. Front light makes everything visible, but visibility isn’t the same thing as dimension. Start moving your light around the subject. Side light reveals texture. Backlight can make liquids glow, illuminates condensation, brings steam to life, and creates separation around the edges of food. A simple single-light setup positioned correctly can look significantly more expensive than a complicated setup with three or four lights placed poorly. Here’s an exercise I want you to start doing: before changing your camera settings, modifiers, props, or editing, move the light. Sometimes 12 inches completely changes the image. And remember that you’re not just lighting the object. You’re deciding where you want the viewer to look. COMMUNITY CHALLENGE: Photograph the exact same dish or drink three times: 1. Front light
2. Side light
3. Backlight Don’t change the subject. Don’t change the styling. Change the direction of the light and study what happens to the texture, shadows, reflections, and depth. Post all three and tell us which one makes you want to eat or drink it the most.
