Why I care about your muscle more than your weight
Two people step on the same scale. Same weight, same height, same age. The scale says they're twins. New research says one of them may be carrying a 42% higher risk of dying early, and the scale has no idea. THE STUDY YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT Researchers in Germany just published one of the largest analyses ever done on muscle and lifespan: 49 studies, more than 1.1 million adults, and 83,798 deaths, all pooled to answer one question. Does lean mass (everything on your frame that isn't body fat, which for our purposes mostly means muscle) predict how long you live? The answer was loud. People with low lean mass had a 42% higher risk of dying from any cause than people with high lean mass. For men the gap was even wider: 56% higher risk. And the finding held up across every age group, every region, and every cause of death they checked. My favorite detail: the strongest single predictor wasn't a high-tech body scan. It was calf circumference. A tape measure. People with skinny calves showed more than double the risk. @Nate Finch The key with using any GLP medication is focusing on the 3 pillars: nutrition, training, and lifestyle. Without incorporating those 3 pillars, once coming off the meds (if that's even possible) people will likely see a fast return of fat mass, similar to if someone goes on a crash diet. So before I recommend any medication I want to see a solid foundation with the 3 pillars first, then we can have the conversation if GLPs will serve any benefit. Sometimes the progress with the traditional nutrition, fitness, and lifestyle plan does not even warrant going on the meds. If you don't need them, why go on them? The problem with protocols from your doctor is they don't come with how to train, how or what to eat, and generally they will just follow a dosing protocol bumping it up on a timeline without looking into why there might be a plateau or without having any conversation on the 3 pillars. Research clearly shows that you should be strength training, should be eating high protein diet, and working on lifestyle choices. This is why working with a coach while on the meds is vitally important. High fiber can be tricky while on the meds as eating otherwise healthy foods like fiberous foods or foods like kimchi can make digestion more difficult because the meds slow the gastric emptying to give you the feeling of fullness. Fiber is still important it just can feel tough to get it all in. Protein has a similar effect as it metabolizes slower than other foods, however, many clients on it have had no issues hitting the protein, or fiber, because their bodies are used to the higher nutrients before going on the meds (another reason why its so important to work on nutrition before going on the meds). Coming off the meds is certainly possible for most people. However, all the critical components put into practice to achieve the results they want should, if not must, be continued after using the meds. This is no different then if someone goes on a traditional diet and achieves their desired goal, if they do not maintain their habits (nutrition, training, and lifestyle), they will almost always put the weight back on and usually surpass the point of where they started in the first place.

🧂 Sea Salt or Pink Himalayan Salt? The Answer Is Neither
Real talk: you’ve probably paid extra for a “healthier” salt at some point. Pink Himalayan, fancy sea salt, the stuff with the pretty crystals. Let’s look at what the actual research says. 🔬 WHAT THE STUDY FOUND Researchers ran 31 samples of pink salt through a mass spectrometer (a machine that measures exactly what minerals are in something) and compared them to iodized table salt. Here’s the deal: • Sodium is basically the same across all of them. Table, sea, pink — doesn’t matter. Salt is salt. • The “trace minerals” are real, but tiny. To get a meaningful amount of them, you’d need to eat more than 30 grams of pink salt a day — that’s about 6 teaspoons. • 6 teaspoons of salt is dangerous. Let's dig into where this claim is coming from — good news, there's no reason to panic. 🔬 WHERE THIS HEADLINE CAME FROM There's no human research showing sweeteners damage brain cells. The new coverage is based on a lab study on erythritol, a popular zero-calorie sweetener. Researchers took cells that line the tiny blood vessels in the brain, put them in a dish, and soaked them in erythritol — about the amount in one sweet drink (roughly 30 grams) — for 3 hours straight.
