Thank you SAVI
Over the past year, I've spent a lot of time here, (and a few months in paid). I've listened to every episode of the hours, I've gone through RDS, LL, and a bunch of cohort videos. It has transformed my philosophy on coaching. We just finished my first season as a SAVI coach (my 15th or so season overall) with our 7th Grade girls. We did a modified version of LL blue so that the girls had less to think about since they were usually in the same spots relative to the ball. We did pressure for about 75% of the court. We also did a basic version of RDS, where the primary focus was getting great spacing. Our actions were Fingers and zoom. I think over the 10 games we played we didnt run either great 1 time. But we raced, raced, raced, and raced some more. We were the more aggressive team in almost every game. We had never attempted 3's in a game before this year and as a team made almost 2 per game on average and shot about 15 per game. In practice we played a lot of games, pass tag, ultimate basketball (we call it touchdown), racecar. Most of the time we were split on half the court because the 8th grade coaches decided LL wasnt for them after the first few practices of adversity. So while they were trying to install their SLOB, and half court plays, we were screaming playing crazy and having a blast. You could see the difference when it came to games. Our girls were aggressive, tenacious, shared the ball and were just a pleasure to watch most of the time (We did struggle to make our 9s and 7s but I know that will come with time). When other teams Pressed us we handled it with poise, breaking it without the ball touching the floor many times. I was so proud of everything we became. The 8th grade team struggled through the year. I'm not saying its all because of what we did vs what they did. I know it did play a big factor though. Oh and our wolf got hurt before our last 2 games and was unable to play. She was the girl that everyone else depended on in 4th - 6th grade. We won both games the girls still played great, broke presses, and looked like a team.

Nice work! Way to stick with it. We are a month into our season and I'm excited for what is to come. Our first few games we lost by 20 or more. We turned the corner this week and some things are starting to stick and take shape. We played a team that beat us by 21 the first time and we lost by 5 the second time.
Implementing LL
Our HS season is about to start. I am going to implement LL. We have 7-10 practices before our first game. What would be the most valuable parts to have installed before game 1

What's up buddy?! Agreed. One layer at a time. My team had a hard time figuring out the transition roles because everyone was so used to picking up a specific man. It took a few practices and games to figure it out. I also went with combined roles (combining race and space and LL) for simplicity (12u boys). Racker is Wolf, Bolt is Wall, Dragon is Nail, Lock Left and Lock Right are Gap and Snipe.
lock left implementation
Coaching 12u boys. Last year we dipped our toes in the water of LockLeft and really didn't do much other than forcing left. This year I'm aiming to jump in with both feet and not look back. 3 practices in and the boys are having difficulty with the transition role based match up vs tradition 'I"m guarding so and so". Also, I"m still trying to figure out what exactly a skirmish and a scram are and how to best teach the helping roles. Any thoughts from the group on implementation, using the concepts in man vs zone, etc are welcome. Thanks, Ryan

Josh, thanks for the note. We are going to try some things this week and see how they go. Our first game is Nov 1. I'm leaning into the D a little more than the O to start the season. We'll see how it goes. Agreed, I like the idea of skirmishing, and I think it's more doable to keep simple and still create some havoc. Do you have any drills that you especially like for teaching the roles and concepts?

I appreciate the thoughts and clarifications. I like the idea of calling a freeze for learning the roles. I'll give that a try.
