What are you planning to sell?
While this seems like it may be the easiest question to answer, it is essential to give it a lot of thought. Finding items that are readily accessible is key. Not every item will be a thousand dollar unicorn. There is an absolute learning curve that can be flattened a bit learning your niche before ever listing your first item. If you can find a market that peaks your interest, and has a good return of investment, it will be much easier to get moving in a positive direction.

@Stephen Trotter That actually works in your favor 😂 your cleanout business is basically feeding your eBay inventory. Have you started listing the books and other items yet?

@Stephen Trotter I hear you, bro! When you get a little free time, would you be open to sharing a few ideas with me for just a few minutes? I’d really appreciate your insight, whenever you’re available.

I am a pretty busy guy. Have a full time ebay business, kids and a family. I always make time to answer questions though. Let me know what I can help you with.

@Valerie Small-richards I’m a newbie to eBay too, but I’m most familiar with Shopify and have had some really good sales over there. I’m looking forward to learning how eBay compares, what type of products are you planning to start with?

I'm new here
Hey everyone, I’m new here and just joined a few days ago. I’m curious, what’s one thing that helped you get your first consistent sales on eBay? Was it better sourcing, better listings, pricing, photos, or just posting more consistently? Looking forward to learning from everyone

@Mick Messoline Thanks for the welcome, Mick—understood. I'm here to learn how sellers use the tools already available on eBay, not turn the group into a sales pitch. Your posts on listings and photos look like a good starting point. I appreciate you sharing the practical side of running the business.

@Stephen Trotter Hello👋
What about the pictures?
Well that is a fantastic question! What about the pictures? Honestly your pictures are the showcase of your items. If you want your items to sell then a buyer has to be able to see it! That means; Get quality photos of your items Make sure you photograph the actual item you are selling(especially in the secondary market, if it’s not brand new then you have to show the item) Make sure to document any issues with the item with the photos Do you need a thousand dollar camera? Absolutely NOT! You likely already have one and you carry it with you everywhere! The quality of color balance and light adjustment available in the standard cell phone it far superior to most entry to mid level point and shoot cameras. We actually use a cell phone in our shop for our eBay photos! Do you have any additional questions? Ask away!

The point about showing the actual condition is important. From a design perspective, I'd keep a simple shot list: the whole item, a detail or label, scale, and any wear—without editing away anything the buyer needs to see. Mick, when you review beginners' listings, is lighting usually the bigger problem, or missing useful angles?
