I’ve been thinking about how strange it is that being creative changes how we relate to ourselves, other people we meet, how we assess our days, as good, bad, boring, fun etc. When I’m painting or writing regularly, I notice a difference in how I move through the rest of my day. I pay more attention. I have more ideas. I’m more curious. Even when what I’m making isn’t particularly good, the act of making seems to open something up. It's the noticing, the paying attention that is key I think. And I think that’s one of the things we forget about creativity. We get so focused on the finished thing — the painting, the book, the photograph, the thing we can show someone — that we forget how much happens to us while we’re making it. That's why I'm all about getting folks excited to start that picture, the sketches, the stories, take the photos. It's not about being a specific label or identity, drop that confining box, and I'd suggest you just doodle one evening as you watch the Box (what we called tv in England...) I’m curious about whether you find the labels stop you from playing, being creative? Do you notice a difference in yourself when you’re making things regularly? What does being creative actually do for you?
