OCTOBER 1 — BACK TO THE BENCH
The last three months of 2026 start today. And I’ve decided Guitar Mod Lab needs less talking about guitars and more actually messing with them. So October to December is going to be about projects. Cheap guitars. Small mods. Bad ideas. Colour experiments. Rescues. Things that work. Things that absolutely do not work. I’ve already got several guitars waiting for attention, so there’s really no respectable excuse. Consider this the start of The Last 90 Days. Let’s make some boring guitars considerably less boring.

Why I am so busy….
There’s a lot going on at the moment - and this is a big part of it. I’m playing in two bands - both with customised guitars!

Most stock guitars are basically school uniforms...
Same colours. Same pickguards. Same knobs. Same safe little combinations. Functional? Sure. Interesting? Sorry I fell asleep there... The whole point of Guitar Mod Lab is to get out of uniform. Change the pickguard. Swap the knobs. Try a colour combination that would make a factory product manager nervous. Make the thing feel like yours. Of course, there is one obvious exception to the rule that school uniforms are boring and restrictive: AC/DC's Angus Young somehow turned one into the least restrictive outfit in rock history. For everyone else, the uniform can go. Take the boring guitar. Make it yours.

MOD LAB LIVE
New weekly live session: Mod Lab Live Every week I’ll jump on for 30 minutes to talk through guitar and bass mods, ideas, problems and half-baked plans. Bring a guitar, a part you’re thinking about changing, a colour idea, a repair, a rescue project, or just something you’re not sure about. If nobody turns up, I’ll work on one of my own projects anyway and use the time productively. Weekly. 30 minutes. Practical, affordable, creative. First one is now in the calendar for next week - THURSDAYS at 1pm ACST (Australian Central Standard Time)
