Old Drill I Found - GB SWINGS
I was digging through an old folder and found this drill - looks like it was created winter of 2014. I remember making this up during a training session in the gym at Highland Catholic Middle School (yay space constraint). It was just a way to get ground balls, stick work and finishing all in one drill and have it be meaningful for a small group of mixed positions. I think as I got older, I got in a bad habit of leaving simple, easy, drills behind. But this is an awesome multi - player drill to not only get stickwork reps, but, could be the base to more stuff. As I am writing this I envision I could throw in a goalie and Player 2 could turn into a defender as soon as they swing the ball to Player 3 for a 1v1 to the goal 🤷‍♂️

Team Taglines
I know team taglines are popular with teams, especially putting that in this time of year during planning... Some teams use the same one all the time (ex. Syracuse Head.Heart.Hustle) and some change from year to year with input from the players themselves. Three big ideas that were used with my team last year: 1. "Climb" - referring to "Climbing the mountain" - just trying to be process focused and let the outcome take care of itself. 2. "Champions on our worst day" - literally meaning, raising our level of play to where our worst was good enough to win, but figuratively, not letting our emotions dictate the behavior of a championship team. Can I do what I need to do on days I don't feel like it or don't have the juice? 3. "A lot to accomplish but nothing to prove" - this comes from the fact that our team was finally relevant. Finally a team in contention. Still not a ton of widespread respect (at least it felt that way). But we can't be trying to "prove ourselves" instead we should be trying to "accomplish our goals" - tries to reframe the mindset into focusing internally and blocking the noise. What did you guys use? Or, what are your favorites over the years?

Roster Sizes
What is the ideal roster size for a lacrosse team? For context, I am thinking a 12U age to Varsity HS team. Teams playing 10v10 full field. Things I am factoring in my head: Ample playing time, enough bodies in case theres an injury/absence but also what can optimize practice productivity? Follow up question: What would be considered "ample" playing time for a youth player in a game?

@Austin Polson-McCannon That sounds like a well thought out breakdown and 18-19 range seems like a really good number for youth/club. Given that it's 45ish minute run time games. I just struggle with optimizing for practice productivity or playing time. I think having 26 guys on a team (2+ goalies) gives you the ability to run high level practices and actually practice full field situations. And, if you're missing 4-5 guys you still have almost the full drill book to work from. When you're at 18, and 4-5 guys are gone. It starts to get dicey. But, you can't have 26 on a team for games unless theres an expectation that some kids won't play much, or, its full stop time games.

@Cory Hunt Great breakdown! I agree that at youth we have to develop as much as possible, especially in a growing area. I like the call out and idea of Short Sticks/Poles for 12U given the rise from 10U smaller sided/field. Goalie development..... that deserves its own thread maybe even its own skool community 😭

Film and Analytics
Just had a great call with @Alex Kelly and @Ted S about Film and Analytics. It was awesome learning from Coach Kelly tonight on how he approaches film with the Spuds and how he's starting to think about analytics and implement them into his strategy. This call has been added in the classroom under Film Study. I also shared on our podcast Down the Alley and Youtube to continue to spread awareness of this community. Continue to give us feedback and ideas as we build out the classroom content!
