I served in the military for 24 years and although I retired 8 years ago I still believe that the world needs more leadership and less likership. We were taught that leadership is the accomplishment of the task/mission through the efforts of others while providing purpose, motivation, and direction. I've learned it to be so much more than that. As a leader, you must be, know, do (another military ideation). Be - Be the example so that others can follow in your footsteps by emulating what they see you doing. No matter where you are, there you are, and people are observing everything you say and do. Know - Know the the standard, but more importantly know people. Understanding exactly what knowledge, skills, and experience your people bring to the team will allow for you to assign tasks accordingly, train to weaknesses, utilize their strengths, reward and counsel that will build the team instead of tearing it apart. Do - Do the work instead of simply telling others to do what you are not willing and/or capable of doing. That means you must never forget where you came from and never be too proud to get in there and do exactly what you ask of your people. You are capable of becoming the leader you are meant to be and others deserve through your daily actions. Leadership achieves far greater results than likership when you stand with your people instead of simply being above them.
