Hi, everyone! So I have a question. So I’m doing a lesson for a children’s section at a church in Virginia with Grizzleby. Along with that, I’m trying to determine who to bring with me for some filming content. Who should I bring?

One small routine, different audiences
Seeing the holiday performance plans here has me thinking about audiences. When I did close-up card magic, reading the people in front of me mattered as much as the trick. I’m still learning the ventriloquism side. For a short routine, what do you change first when the audience shifts from mostly adults to a mix of kids and adults: the references, the pacing, or the way the character gets into trouble? I’d love a practical example.

Well, I think it’s all about reading the room, both physically and mentally. In explanation, not only do you have to know your audience’s expectations, but also how you plan to either meet or exceed their expectations.

As an example, I was involved in my college’s production “Hollywood’s Worst Screen Tests”. My character was a screenwriter/ventriloquist. My sidekick, Grizzleby, started off in the ending, but my director liked our chemistry so much, she included him as my screenwriting assistant as well as my acting partner. I also got to include him in ways no one had seen in ventriloquism.
If you had or have a mentor, what was the biggest thing they taught you?
My mentor was Peter Rolston, a local vent who had a kids tv show called Pete’s Place. To get to the point, I got to see a taping of his show when I was 6. We met again when I started performing in my 20s. He became my mentor and my friend. So we were on a tour together, going from Vancouver to Vancouver Island by ferry. All during the trip, dozens of people recognized Peter and stopped to tell how much they loved his show etc. HERE THE LESSON. I asked Peter “Doesn’t get tiring?” He said ,”Why shouldn’t I be nice to them? They bought my house and put my girls through university. I have a real problem with performers who ignore fans. Without them, you be home alone talking to your puppet. “

I have several mentors, actually. My primary mentor, Marian Gehman, taught me I’m my own obstacle from being a ventriloquist. I deal with some anxiety and self-doubt, but she taught me to keep going and see the potential in each performance.
Potential Performance
Please let me ask this. Keep me in your thoughts as I potentially prepare for a possible performance for a local organization in the holiday months.
