Pricing -- day rates vs per song
I am interested in peoples opinions on day rates vs per song and what the best approaches are. I have always done day rate, but I end up doing a lot of pre production and bits and pieces. But I think a per song will look too much as one lump amount, as people tend to prefer to try and get a lot done in the time. But I refocusing my studio work and have new clients coming in I will be doing a lot of production work on, including playing and arrangment, so I wonder about how I might approach this going forward. Is it offering the options? What guardrails do people put in place? I do indie guitar and song based music, not pop or electronic, so its alternative and band or songwriter led.

Thanks for your reply. This makes sense. I am keen to try something along this. I am watching the Classroom videos atm and they are helpful for thinking this all through. I think one with bigger artists its much clearer, but with smaller more DIY indie types its muddier. I have noticed, due to my background in songwriting and session playing etc, I am working with people that want me to produce play arrange and help finish the songs. I am wondering more now about royalties and points. With bigger artsts with labels managers etc this is simpler and my lawyer in past has been clear that its just the way its done. But with indie DIY and artists more in other scenes it can be hard to bring this stuff in and not sound like you are trying to grab from them from their 'song'. How do you usually approach this? And do you have different prices for how much you responsiblity of types of labour? For instance if I am recording musicians and adding direction and production ideas compared to playing and working all parts out.
