Found this in my hotel bathroom in Ireland. It says SHAVERS ONLY — and it's not a suggestion, it's physics. Behind that little socket is an isolation transformer. The output isn't referenced to earth, so if you touch a live pin while standing in a puddle, there's no complete path back through you to ground. No path, no shock. It's also current-limited, so you couldn't run a hair dryer off it if you tried. Compare that to how we handle it in the States: we let you plug in whatever you want near water, but we put a GFCI in front of it that trips in milliseconds if current leaks. Two totally different philosophies — the UK/Ireland prevents the fault path from existing, the US detects the fault and kills it fast. Bonus for the Americans: see that 115V slot? My wife wasn't even surprised. So let's talk about what's on the wall over here vs. back home: 🔌 THE PLUG: Ireland uses the Type G plug (BS 1363) — that big three-prong rectangular one. Here's the part I love: EVERY plug has its own fuse built right into it. Not the panel — the plug itself. Blow a fuse on your kettle? You replace it in the plug, not the breaker box. ⚡ THE VOLTAGE: 230V at 50Hz over here, vs. our 120V at 60Hz. Nearly double the voltage — which is why that little travel adapter is doing more than changing pin shapes. Most modern chargers are dual-voltage (check the fine print: "100–240V"), but plug in a US-only hair dryer and you'll get a light show you didn't pay for. 🔘 SWITCHED SOCKETS: Notice every outlet has its own on/off switch on the faceplate.
