Can You Learn From a Philosophy You Disagree With?
Today I want to do something a little different. A debate. Not an argument. Not trying to prove somebody wrong. A real discussion where we can challenge each other's thinking, hear opposing views, and maybe walk away seeing something differently than we did before. That's actually very much in the spirit of the ancient philosophers. I've been reading Seneca's Letters from a Stoic, and one thing I've found interesting is how often Seneca references Epicurus. Stoicism and Epicureanism weren't the same philosophy. They disagreed on some pretty fundamental things. Yet Seneca was still willing to read Epicurus, quote him, and take wisdom from him when he believed there was something worth learning. I think there's a lesson in that alone. So here's today's debate: Do you think we should actively expose ourselves to ideas and philosophies we disagree with, or does doing that risk weakening our own principles and convictions? My view is that if your beliefs are strong, they should be able to withstand being challenged. And if somebody on the other side has a better argument, I'd rather understand it than ignore it. But that's what I want to hear from you guys. Pick a side. Make your case. Then challenge someone else's position respectfully. The goal isn't to win. The goal is to leave the conversation thinking better than when we entered it.
Can You Learn From a Philosophy You Disagree With?
Most people can't, just look at Twitter. Today, 'safety' means everyone must think exactly like you, share your values and even look like you. When you see schools say 'everyone is welcome' they mean everyone who thinks and behaves like them. This is commonly called an echo chamber. This idea of extreme conformity to ideals is dangerous in my opinion. The main reason why is because it justifies using violence against someone who doesn't agree with that person. That is called moral relativism. They refuse to consider anything different than what they have been conditioned to believe. I personally learn from people I don't agree with. I find human psychology interesting.
What Are You Tolerating?
There’s usually something in our lives we know needs to change. Not some massive life overhaul. Something small we’ve allowed to stick around because dealing with it is uncomfortable. Maybe it’s: - A habit you keep making excuses for. - A conversation you’ve been avoiding. - A boundary you haven’t enforced. - Something you keep saying you’ll start “next week.” - An environment that makes it harder to be disciplined. The dangerous part is that what you tolerate eventually becomes normal. And once it becomes normal, you stop questioning it. So instead of another lesson today, I want to turn this one back on the Brotherhood: What’s ONE thing you’ve been tolerating that you know needs to change? And more importantly… What are you going to do about it? Drop yours below. I’ll add mine in the comments too.
What Are You Tolerating?
I'm tolerating complacency and need to put myself out there in terms of content, art and philosophy.
You Can Only Build ONE First. Choose.
Which matters more for building a strong man? 🔥 Discipline — doing what needs to be done regardless of how you feel. 🧭 Purpose — having a strong enough reason behind what you're doing in the first place. You can obviously argue that we need both. But if you could only build one first, which would you choose? Pick your side, then defend it in the comments. I’ve got my answer, but I want to hear where you guys land first.

Purpose sets the target, discipline gets you there — so purpose first. Even if you don't have a clear and define purpose, just move towards something. Many people say that they don't know what they want. And they just sit there in complacency. As long as you move somewhere, your purpose will become clearer. Don't let a vague idea of what you want stop you. Don't let not knowing at all what you want stop you. Keep moving and you will find direction and purpose.
🏛️ SUNDAY STOA | NO MAN IS FREE...
“No man is free who is not master of himself.” — Epictetus Read that one a couple of times. We talk a lot about freedom, financial freedom, freedom over our time, freedom to live how we want. But Epictetus puts forward a different definition entirely. Today, I'm not going to break the quote down. I want the brotherhood to do it. What does being “master of yourself” actually mean? And here's the harder question: Can a man have everything he wants externally and still not be free? Drop your interpretation below. I want to see how differently each of us reads the same words.
🏛️ SUNDAY STOA | NO MAN IS FREE...
@Cody Giroux I think it is how we are nurtured. A few generations ago we were mostly self-sufficient. If you didn't hunt, you didn't eat. Today we just fall back on government welfare. I think naturally seeking comfort has been programmed into us and is not our natural state. Children before 5 are mostly not programmed and they are always running around trying things, falling, exploring etc. As we get nurtured by TV, teachers, parents, media etc., we are told to not take risks, get a safe job, don't fail etc. Then that becomes our norm. To reverse it, be aware that virtually everything that we have been told is a lie and that we are easily programmed. Then program yourself. I think it comes down to identity. I don't know of any 'one way' to reprogram but if you keep trying, I'm sure it will happen.
@Cody Giroux I've been working on figuring out which beliefs are mine and which were given to me. I estimate less than 1% are mine. I was listening to an astronomer last week. He bought his own scope and does his own research focusing on the sun and moon and what our system really is. One thing he said is that he refuses to look at other people's work and ideas because he doesn't want to contaminate his own ideas. That really hit me. Everything I learn is someone else's work. I am just a compilation of other people's intellectual property. Where is my original thought? That is one main reason why I study less now. I'm learning how to think for myself, come up with my own ideas and convey those to the world.
WHAT ARE YOU FOCUSED ON THIS AUGUST?
New month. Good time to take stock and decide where your attention needs to go. We all have areas that could use work, but usually there's one area that needs to take priority right now. For August, where are you putting the most focus? Vote below. Then if you're willing, drop a comment with the ONE thing you're working on in that area this month. Let's see where the Forge is putting its attention in August.
