The Importance of Indigenous Land Acknowledgements in Canada
An Indigenous land acknowledgement is more than an opening statement at a meeting or event. It is an opportunity to recognize the First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples whose histories, cultures, rights, and relationships with the land continue to shape Canada. It acknowledges that many events take place on traditional territories, treaty lands, or lands subject to unresolved land claims. When offered with understanding and sincerity, a land acknowledgement can encourage reflection on colonization, treaties, reconciliation, and our shared responsibilities to Indigenous communities. Its meaning is not simply to recognize the past, but to connect that recognition to respectful relationships, meaningful learning, and action toward justice and inclusion. Where did the practice originate, and how long has it existed? There is an important distinction between Indigenous traditions of acknowledging territory and the formal land acknowledgement statements commonly delivered at Canadian events today. #1 - Traditional protocols: Indigenous nations have long maintained protocols for entering, visiting, and gathering on another nation's territory. These practices vary among nations and communities and have roots extending across generations. They should not be treated as one universal custom. #2 - Modern public practice: Formal land acknowledgements have developed in different ways in different countries. Australia's public Acknowledgement of Country became more prominent from the late 20th century onward. In Canada, formal acknowledgements became increasingly common in universities, public institutions, and at events, particularly following the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's final report and 94 Calls to Action in 2015. Therefore, it would be inaccurate to assign one precise starting date to all land acknowledgements. The underlying Indigenous protocols are longstanding, while the contemporary institutional practice in Canada has grown significantly over the past decade.
