Sales and Use Taxes Due
Sales and Taxes do not belong to the company and/or agency who collects. That money belongs to the state you are collecting it for. You collect it from customers at checkout, then hand it over to the state — you're not paying it out of your own pocket, you're just the collector. These collected funds are usually deposited in a State General Fund account and dedicated to public education, transportation, healthcare, and public safety in that state. Statewide general sales or use are not paid in Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, or Oregon. In various states the amount you collect determines if you have to pay quarterly or monthly. In the state of Maryland, revenue of $15k and under requires a quarterly filing. However in excess of $15k, a monthly filing is mandatory. What is "Economic Nexus" for remote sellers? It is mandate based on the 2018 South Dakota vs. Wayfair Supreme Court decision replacing the required physical location rule. Do a little inquisitive research and let's have a dialogue about how this applies to your online business if you have one! Also tune in to find out what is needed to successfully pass a Sales and Use Tax Audit.
